Chapter 1: The Night the Moon Turned Away

Chapter 1: The Night the Moon Turned Away
"The Moon has made its choice."
Elder Rowan's voice carried across the stone courtyard.
Every member of the Blackridge Pack stood in perfect silence.

Hundreds of eyes settled on Aria Vale.
She lowered her head.
Her silver ceremonial cloak fluttered in the cold wind.
Across from her stood Alpha Kael Thorne.
Tall.
Confident.
Untouchable.
The strongest Alpha the northern territories had seen in decades.
For years, everyone believed Aria would become his Luna.
Even she believed it.
Until tonight.
Kael stepped forward.
His expression never changed.
"I reject this bond."
A gasp rippled through the crowd.
Someone dropped a silver goblet.
It shattered against the stone floor.
Aria looked into Kael's eyes.
She searched for regret.
She found none.
"You deserve someone stronger," he said.
"My pack deserves a Luna whose bloodline is known."
Silence answered him.
Aria swallowed the ache in her throat.
"My blood has never betrayed this pack."
Kael folded his arms.
"But no one knows where you came from."
"You have no family."
"No scent tied to any recognized lineage."
"I can't build a dynasty on unanswered questions."
The words landed harder than any blade.
A young warrior laughed.
Another whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"Maybe she's only half wolf."
Several people smiled.
No one defended her.
Not even those she had healed after battles.
Aria slowly removed the moonstone bracelet from her wrist.
It had been Kael's gift on her eighteenth birthday.
She placed it carefully on the ceremonial altar.
"I won't force anyone to choose me."
Her voice remained steady.
Even though her heart threatened to break.
Kael gave a brief nod.
"I'm glad you understand."
Then another woman walked toward him.
Lydia Ashcroft.
The daughter of a wealthy Alpha.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Perfect in every way the elders admired.
Kael reached for her hand.
A servant presented an ornate silver crown.
The crowd erupted into applause.
Lydia smiled as if victory had always belonged to her.
"I promise to stand beside you," she whispered.
Kael kissed the back of her hand.
Aria turned away.
She refused to let them see her cry.
One step.
Then another.
Each one felt heavier than the last.
She had almost reached the outer gate when an old groundskeeper quietly blocked her path.
His weathered eyes searched hers.
"You should keep this."
He slipped a small iron key into her hand.
She frowned.
"I've never seen this before."
"It belonged to the woman who left you at Blackridge seventeen years ago."
Aria froze.
"You knew her?"
The old man hesitated.
"I made a promise."
"I was only allowed to give you the key if the Alpha rejected you."
Before Aria could ask another question, a distant engine echoed through the valley.
Then another.
Then several more.
The celebration music suddenly stopped.
Bright headlights pierced the darkness beyond the pack's front gates.
One armored vehicle appeared.
Then five.
Then ten.
Every vehicle carried the same silver wolf crest painted across its doors.
None of the elders recognized it.
But the old groundskeeper did.
His face turned pale.
"They found you."
The massive gates shook as heavily armed guards stepped out in perfect formation.
Not a single weapon was raised.
They didn't come looking for a fight.
They came with purpose.
The lead vehicle stopped.
A woman in a charcoal coat stepped into the moonlight.
Her dark hair was streaked with silver.
A scar crossed one eyebrow.
Power radiated from her without a single word.
She looked directly at Aria.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then the woman smiled.
"I've spent seventeen years searching for my daughter."
The courtyard fell silent.
Kael slowly released Lydia's hand.
"What did you just say?"
The woman ignored him completely.
She walked toward Aria instead.
When she was only a few feet away, she placed one hand over her heart.
Then she bowed.
Every guard behind her did the same.
"My name is Selene Vale."
"I didn't come to ask for forgiveness."
May you like
"I came to take the last heir of House Vale home."
For the first time that night, every Alpha in Blackridge realized they had rejected someone whose name carried far more power than their own.
