Chapter 4 - A Lie With Good Lighting.

By nine o'clock that morning, the video of Victoria accusing Elena had already reached the internet.
By nine fifteen, it had been viewed more than eighty thousand times.
By ten, Elena's name was trending locally for reasons she could barely understand.
The first clip ended before Julian ordered the CCTV footage.
It showed Victoria pointing.
It showed Elena denying the accusation.
It showed the necklace being removed from Elena's bag.
Then it cut to black.
The caption above it read HOTEL EMPLOYEE CAUGHT WITH DONOR'S DIAMONDS.
Elena stared at the phone in disbelief.
"They cut out the part where she planted it."
Mrs. Patel stood beside her in Julian's private office.
"Someone wants the first version to travel faster than the truth."
Julian entered carrying two coffees and a legal pad.
"It's not random."
He placed one coffee in front of Elena.
"The account that posted the clip was created six minutes after the gala ended."
"Can you trace it?"
"Not yet."
Grant walked in behind him.
His sister, Caroline Whitmore, was not with him.
Elena looked at his hand.
"Where is she?"
Grant closed the door.
"Caroline says she left before eight."
Julian leaned against the desk.
"Her emerald ring says otherwise."
"She claims someone borrowed it."
Elena stared at him.
"Who borrows a ring during a charity gala?"
"According to Caroline, Victoria."
Julian gave a dry laugh.
"Of course."
Grant looked exhausted.
"Caroline is coming in with her attorney this afternoon."
Elena's phone buzzed again.
This time it was not an anonymous threat.
It was an email from the Mercer Grand's human resources department.
She read the first sentence twice.
Then a third time.
Mrs. Patel saw her face.
"What is it?"
Elena handed her the phone.
Mrs. Patel's expression darkened.
"Absolutely not."
Julian straightened.
"What?"
Mrs. Patel read aloud.
"Pending review of last night's incident and due to ongoing public attention, Ms. Elena Marquez is placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately."
Julian's face went cold.
"Who authorized that?"
"Your HR director."
"On whose instruction?"
Mrs. Patel scrolled.
"Corporate risk committee."
Julian reached for his phone.
Elena stopped him.
"Don't."
"Elena, this is my company."
"Then your company just told me I'm the problem."
"That's not what this says."
"It's exactly what it says."
Grant stepped forward.
"They're probably trying to protect you from the media."
Elena turned on him.
"Do not explain this to me like it's a favor."
Grant fell silent.
"Victoria accused me."
Elena's voice remained controlled, which somehow made it sharper.
"The cameras proved she lied."
"And this morning I'm the one who isn't allowed to work."
Julian looked furious.
"I'll fix it."
"You shouldn't have to fix something your people chose to do."
The office phone rang.
Julian answered.
His expression changed while he listened.
"Send it to me."
He hung up.
"Victoria's attorney just issued a statement."
Mason forwarded the document to Julian's tablet.
Julian read it in silence.
Grant took the tablet from him halfway through.
"She's claiming emotional distress."
Elena laughed in disbelief.
"She framed me, and she's distressed?"
Grant kept reading.
"She says the CCTV clip is incomplete and taken out of context."
Julian's eyebrows lifted.
"Out of context?"
"She says she placed the necklace in Elena's bag after finding it on the floor because she intended to keep it safe."
Elena stared at him.
"Then why did she accuse me of stealing it?"
"Her statement says she became confused during a stressful evening."
Mrs. Patel muttered something under her breath.
Julian continued reading.
"And she alleges Elena had been threatening to expose private foundation matters unless Victoria paid her."
The room went silent.
Elena felt heat rise into her face.
"What?"
Grant looked up.
"She says she has audio."
Julian's phone chimed.
A file had arrived from Victoria's attorney.
He played it.
Elena's voice filled the office.
"If you don't give me what I asked for, everyone is going to know what you did."
Then Victoria's voice answered.
"Are you threatening me?"
Elena felt as though someone had dropped ice down her back.
"That's my voice."
Mrs. Patel stared at her.
"Did you say that?"
"Not to Victoria."
The audio continued.
Elena's voice said, "You have until tonight."
The clip ended.
Grant looked at her carefully.
"Where could those words have come from?"
Elena forced herself to think past the panic.
"Last week."
She stood.
"I was talking to a florist about a replacement arrangement."
Julian frowned.
"Those exact words?"
"Not in that order."
Elena replayed the memory.
"I told him, 'If you don't give me what I asked for, the entire head table is going to know what you did to the centerpiece.'"
Mrs. Patel almost smiled despite the tension.
"He used orange lilies instead of white roses."
"Exactly."
Elena pointed at the phone.
"And 'You have until tonight' came from a separate conversation about linen delivery."
Julian's expression hardened.
"So someone edited your recorded workplace conversations into a fake threat."
Grant looked at him.
"Who records hotel employees?"
Julian did not answer immediately.
"Security microphones aren't supposed to capture continuous audio in staff areas."
"Supposed to?"
"There are event production microphones during setup."
Elena looked at him.
"Who has access to those recordings?"
"Production contractors."
Mason entered without knocking.
"And Curtis Lane."
Everyone turned.
"The employee who resigned?"
Mason nodded.
"He supervised audiovisual maintenance before he moved to facilities."
Julian cursed quietly.
Elena felt the pieces aligning in a way she did not like.
A cloned badge.
Deleted camera footage.
Edited audio.
A fake company using her father's name.
This had been prepared before last night.
"Victoria wasn't improvising."
Julian looked at her.
"No."
"She planned the necklace accusation."
"Yes."
"Which means she expected me to deny it."
"Yes."
Elena looked down at the false audio transcript.
"And she already had a second lie ready in case the first one failed."
Nobody argued.
Grant's phone rang.
He looked at the screen and declined the call.
Elena noticed the name before it disappeared.
PATRICIA KNOX.
She recognized it from the gala seating chart.
Patricia Knox chaired the foundation's audit committee.
"Why aren't you answering her?"
Grant looked at Elena.
"Because she wants the board to issue a joint statement supporting Victoria until the review is complete."
Julian stared at him.
"After seeing the CCTV?"
"Patricia says public disagreement will damage the foundation."
Elena shook her head.
"There it is again."
Grant frowned.
"What?"
"Appearance over truth."
He flinched.
Before he could respond, Elena's email refreshed.
A new message appeared from an address made of random letters and numbers.
The subject line contained five words.
ASK YOUR HERO WHAT HE KNEW.
There was one attachment.
Elena opened it.
The photograph showed Grant standing in a parking garage with Owen Reese.
The timestamp in the corner was three months old.
Grant was holding a thick folder.
Owen was pointing toward a page inside it.
On the side of the folder, clearly visible even in the grainy photograph, were the words MARQUEZ COMMUNITY LOGISTICS.
Elena slowly turned the phone toward Grant.
His face went white.
"Three months ago?"
Her voice became almost a whisper.
"You knew about my father's company three months ago."
Grant did not deny it.
Julian looked at him with open disbelief.
"Grant."
Elena stepped back.
The man who had apologized to her the night before suddenly looked less like an ally and more like another person who had been deciding how much truth she was allowed to know.
"Tell me why you had that file."
Grant stared at the photograph.
May you like
Then he looked at Elena.
"Because I had already started investigating Victoria."
