Chapter 13 - The Night Victoria Returned.

Five days after the gala, Victoria Whitmore walked back into the Mercer Grand as if the ballroom still belonged to her.
She wore a white tailored suit instead of black.
Her blonde hair was pinned neatly behind her ears.
There were no diamonds around her neck.
Benjamin Cross walked on her right.
Patricia Knox walked on her left.
Three attorneys followed behind them.
The emergency foundation board meeting had been moved to the same ballroom where Elena had been accused.
Naomi had objected to the location at first.
Elena had not.
"I want her to see the room again."
Naomi studied her.
"You don't owe yourself a dramatic moment."
"I'm not doing it for drama."
Elena looked toward the security monitor that had exposed the necklace setup.
"I'm doing it because last time I stood here, everyone was deciding who I was before I got to speak."
Naomi nodded.
"Then this time you speak first when it matters."
Julian had ordered the ballroom stripped of gala decorations.
No flowers.
No champagne.
No orchestra.
Only a long rectangular table, twelve board chairs, two rows for counsel and witnesses, and the security monitor on the wall.
Grant sat at the far end under the terms of his suspension.
He had no voting authority.
He looked as though five days had aged him five years.
Charles Mercer was not present.
Julian had removed him from all operational hotel authority the previous morning after an emergency corporate vote.
Charles remained chairman in name only while the Mercer board considered his future.
Julian had not spoken to his father since.
Elena sat beside Naomi and Dana.
Margaret Bell sat two chairs away with her old reconciliation ledger in front of her.
Mrs. Patel had insisted on attending and occupied the seat directly behind Elena.
When Victoria entered, she looked first at Grant.
Then Julian.
Then Elena.
Her eyes paused.
For one second, the smile disappeared.
Then it returned.
"Ms. Marquez."
Elena did not answer.
Victoria sat beside Benjamin Cross.
Patricia took the acting chair's seat at the head of the table.
Julian stood.
"You won't be chairing this meeting."
Patricia looked at him.
"This is a foundation board matter."
A board member named Dr. Evelyn Shaw placed a document on the table.
"Six directors signed a temporary recusal resolution this morning."
Patricia's expression tightened.
"On what basis?"
Dana slid a copy of the recovered Camera Twelve fragment toward her.
"On the basis that you were present in the foundation office during the period of missing footage."
Patricia barely looked at it.
"A corrupted reflection is not evidence of misconduct."
"Then the board should have no trouble reviewing it without you controlling the agenda."
Dr. Shaw moved to the head chair.
Patricia sat back slowly.
Victoria whispered something to Benjamin.
He nodded.
The meeting began with Dana's financial presentation.
She walked the board through fourteen point six million dollars in suspicious vendor payments.
She showed the reactivated Marquez company.
She showed E.M. Strategic Consulting.
She showed Elena's stolen identity documents.
She showed the draft complaint Patricia had created five weeks before the gala.
Patricia interrupted.
"That draft was part of a general fraud-response exercise."
Dana looked at her.
"It names Elena Marquez."
"We had received concerns."
Naomi spoke.
"From whom?"
Patricia hesitated.
"Anonymous sources."
"Produce them."
Benjamin Cross leaned forward.
"Ms. Reed, this is not a deposition."
Naomi smiled faintly.
"Then your client can stop answering questions directed at someone else."
Victoria's jaw tightened.
Dana continued.
She displayed the pending six million dollars scheduled to move into the company created in Elena's name.
One board member removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
"Are you telling us someone intended to transfer six million dollars into an account apparently owned by a hotel employee and then accuse her of stealing it?"
Dana answered carefully.
"I am telling you the account, the transfer instructions, and the complaint were all prepared before the necklace accusation."
Victoria finally spoke.
"This is ridiculous."
Every head turned.
She leaned forward.
"Elena had access to donor events for years."
Naomi's eyes narrowed.
Victoria continued.
"She could have gathered information, copied documents, and opened those companies herself."
Elena felt Mrs. Patel shift behind her.
Victoria looked directly at Elena.
"You are all treating her as helpless because she wears a uniform."
Elena almost smiled.
There it was.
The old contempt.
Victoria kept going.
"What if she is not helpless?"
"What if she manipulated my husband because she knew he was investigating the foundation?"
Grant's face hardened.
"Leave her out of our marriage."
Victoria turned toward him.
"You brought her into it."
"You put your necklace in her bag."
"I put it there for safekeeping."
A murmur moved through the board members.
Victoria lifted her chin.
"I found it near her work station."
Julian spoke from the wall.
"Then why did you say she stole it?"
Victoria looked at him.
"I was upset."
"Why did Brooke Halston receive fifty thousand dollars before the gala?"
Victoria's eyes flickered.
Benjamin immediately intervened.
"My client will not answer questions about private financial arrangements."
Naomi placed Brooke's old phone on the table.
"She doesn't need to."
Victoria looked at the phone.
For the first time since entering the ballroom, her posture changed.
Naomi played the voicemail.
Victoria's recorded voice filled the room.
"When Elena's bag is opened, I need you close enough to see inside."
Grant looked down.
Patricia stared at the table.
The recording continued.
"The moment the necklace appears, say it loudly."
Victoria's face remained still.
Then came the line about Marquez Community Logistics.
When the voicemail ended, nobody spoke.
Benjamin Cross recovered first.
"A recording without verified provenance can be edited."
Naomi nodded.
"Which is why we have the original device, carrier records, and Brooke's sworn preservation affidavit."
Victoria turned sharply toward Benjamin.
That detail was new to her.
Naomi saw it.
"Brooke did not enjoy being paid to lie twice."
Victoria's voice became cold.
"Brooke is unstable."
Elena finally spoke.
"She was stable enough when you needed her to accuse me."
Victoria looked at her.
The room tightened.
Elena continued.
"You chose my father's company because he was dead."
Victoria said nothing.
"You chose me because I worked here."
Still nothing.
"You thought a blue uniform would make people believe you before they believed me."
Victoria's mouth curved slightly.
"And for several minutes, they did."
Mrs. Patel inhaled sharply behind Elena.
Grant stared at his wife in disbelief.
Naomi's pen stopped moving.
Victoria realized what she had said.
Benjamin leaned toward her.
"Do not speak further."
Elena looked at Victoria.
"Thank you."
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"For what?"
"For finally saying the quiet part out loud."
The ballroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A thin man in a navy suit entered with a lawyer.
Grant stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.
"Owen."
Owen Reese looked exhausted.
His hair was uncombed.
Dark circles sat beneath his eyes.
He did not look at Victoria.
He walked to the empty witness chair and sat.
His attorney addressed the board.
"Mr. Reese has agreed to provide information to the relevant authorities and to this board subject to his cooperation agreement."
Victoria's face lost color.
Benjamin whispered urgently to her.
Patricia stood.
"This meeting should be adjourned."
Dr. Shaw shook her head.
"Sit down."
Patricia did not.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
"Then sit down and let us learn."
Owen opened a folder.
His hands trembled.
"I processed payments for shell vendors."
The sentence landed heavily.
Grant stared at him.
"How many?"
Owen looked at Dana.
"The six she found, plus two older entities that closed years ago."
Dana immediately began writing.
"Who instructed you?"
Owen swallowed.
"Initially Patricia."
Patricia's face hardened.
"That is false."
Owen continued.
"Later Victoria."
Victoria did not move.
"What was the purpose?"
Dana asked.
Owen looked toward the board.
"At first, the accounts were used to hide unauthorized operating expenses and donor perks that couldn't appear in normal reports."
Dr. Shaw looked disgusted.
"And later?"
"Personal payments."
"To whom?"
"Consulting firms, trusts, property companies."
Dana pointed to the lake house.
"Caroline Whitmore?"
"She didn't know where the money came from."
Grant looked relieved for half a second.
Owen continued.
"Victoria used Caroline's trust because it gave her access to an asset outside her own name."
Elena remembered the emerald ring.
"Why was Patricia wearing Caroline's ring in the office?"
Everyone looked at her.
Owen's face changed.
"You saw that?"
"The camera did."
Owen looked at Victoria.
Then he answered.
"Victoria brought it."
Patricia snapped.
"Owen."
He ignored her.
"Victoria said if anyone saw a hand in the footage, she wanted it to look like Caroline had been there."
Grant stared at his wife.
"You were willing to frame my sister too?"
Victoria's composure finally cracked.
"Don't be dramatic."
Grant laughed in disbelief.
"You framed an employee and prepared my sister as a backup suspect."
"Nothing happened to Caroline."
Elena's voice was quiet.
"Because the camera caught Patricia's face."
Victoria looked at her with open hatred.
Owen continued.
"The plan changed when Grant started asking questions."
Dana leaned forward.
"Explain the Elena Marquez account."
Owen looked ashamed.
"Victoria said Elena was perfect."
Elena felt her skin go cold.
"Perfect for what?"
"She had the last name."
Owen could barely meet her eyes.
"She had hotel access."
"She wasn't wealthy."
"She didn't have lawyers."
Mrs. Patel muttered a curse behind Elena.
Owen kept talking.
"Victoria said if the public saw Elena caught with the necklace first, nobody would question the later fraud complaint."
Naomi's voice was sharp.
"Who created E.M. Strategic Consulting?"
"A contractor working through Northlight."
"Who supplied Elena's identity documents?"
Owen looked toward Julian.
"Someone at Mercer legal."
Julian's face hardened.
"Martin Hale."
Owen nodded.
"Who paid Martin?"
"Northlight."
"Who paid Northlight?"
Owen looked at Victoria.
Benjamin immediately stood.
"My client is ending her participation in this meeting."
Victoria rose.
Dr. Shaw spoke sharply.
"Sit down."
Benjamin shook his head.
"This board has no authority to compel her presence."
Victoria gathered her purse.
She looked at Elena.
"Enjoy your little victory."
Elena remained seated.
"It isn't little."
Victoria smiled thinly.
"You still don't understand."
Julian stepped forward.
"Understand what?"
Victoria looked toward the security monitor.
"You have fragments."
Then she looked at Owen.
"You have a frightened accountant trying to save himself."
Her eyes returned to Elena.
"You have a socialite's voicemail and a dead bookkeeper's notes."
Margaret's eyebrows rose.
"I'm sitting right here."
Victoria ignored her.
"But the eleven minutes that matter are gone."
Elena felt the room shift.
Victoria smiled again.
"You can't prove what happened in that office."
A voice came from the ballroom doorway.
"Actually, she can."
Everyone turned.
A young man in a wrinkled brown jacket stood beside two investigators.
Margaret covered her mouth.
"Curtis."
Curtis Lane held a small black external drive in his hand.
He looked directly at Julian.
"Your cameras lost eleven minutes."
May you like
He raised the drive.
"Mine didn't."
