Chapter 11 - A Witness for Sale.

The guest who had first shouted that the necklace was inside Elena's bag was named Brooke Halston.

She was thirty-six, wealthy, socially connected, and famous in certain circles for appearing at every charity event where cameras were guaranteed.

Elena remembered her perfectly.

Brooke had stood closest when Julian ordered the bag opened.

She had leaned forward before anyone else.

Then she had exclaimed loudly enough for half the ballroom to hear.

"Wait, the necklace is inside!"

At the time, Elena had assumed Brooke was simply dramatic.

By the third day after the gala, Naomi no longer believed in dramatic coincidences.

"She received fifty thousand dollars four days before the event."

Naomi placed a bank record on the table.

Elena stared at it.

"From Victoria?"

"From Northlight Risk Management."

Julian's expression hardened.

"The same company that paid Logan."

Dana nodded.

"Same source account."

Grant sat at the far end of Naomi's conference room.

He had been invited only because his legal team had produced several relevant records.

Elena had not spoken directly to him since the previous day.

Naomi continued.

"The payment is labeled event image consulting."

Elena gave a humorless smile.

"That sounds expensive for standing near a handbag."

"Maybe she did more than stand there."

Naomi pressed play on an audio file.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Brooke.

"Ms. Reed, I don't want my name public, but I need to tell you something about Victoria."

Elena leaned forward.

The recording continued.

"She asked me to make sure people noticed the necklace when the bag was opened."

Naomi paused it.

Julian stared at her.

"When did she call you?"

"Last night."

"Where is Brooke now?"

"Her attorney says she's traveling."

"Convenient."

Naomi resumed the message.

"Victoria said Elena had been stealing from guests and that the hotel was protecting her."

Brooke's recorded voice shook slightly.

"I believed her at first."

Elena's jaw tightened.

"Of course she did."

"Then I saw the CCTV footage."

The message continued.

"Victoria texted me afterward and told me not to worry because the video would be handled."

Julian looked at Dana.

"Handled."

Dana wrote the word down.

Brooke's message ended with a request for legal protection before she would provide documents.

Naomi folded her hands.

"I arranged a meeting with her attorney for this afternoon."

Grant finally spoke.

"She needs to testify."

Elena looked at him.

"You don't get to decide what other people need to do anymore."

Grant lowered his eyes.

"You're right."

At two o'clock, Brooke did not appear.

Her attorney arrived alone.

He carried a statement signed that morning.

Naomi read it in silence.

Her mouth tightened.

"She's recanting."

Elena felt anger flare.

"Everything?"

"She now says she was confused when she contacted me."

Julian leaned back in his chair.

"How much did confusion cost this time?"

Brooke's attorney bristled.

"I suggest you choose your words carefully."

Naomi looked at him.

"I suggest your client preserve every bank record, text message, and deleted communication related to Northlight Risk Management."

The attorney's face changed slightly.

That was enough.

Dana noticed too.

Naomi slid the signed statement back across the table.

"We are not intimidated by a recantation."

"My client will not participate further."

"Then she may receive a subpoena instead of an invitation."

The attorney stood.

"Good afternoon."

After he left, Elena stared at the closed door.

"She got paid again."

Dana was already searching account alerts.

"Likely."

"Can we prove it?"

"Maybe not today."

Julian's phone buzzed.

He read a message and looked at Naomi.

"Brooke just posted a video."

They opened it.

Brooke sat in a bright living room with perfect makeup and soft afternoon light.

The caption read MY TRUTH ABOUT THE WHITMORE GALA.

Elena felt sick before Brooke even began speaking.

"There has been a great deal of misinformation about what I witnessed."

Brooke looked directly into the camera.

"I saw a necklace removed from Elena Marquez's bag."

That part was true.

Then she continued.

"I did not see Victoria Whitmore place it there."

Also technically true from Brooke's position.

"I was pressured by individuals connected to Grant Whitmore to make statements I was not comfortable making."

Grant stood.

"That's a lie."

Brooke continued.

"I believe this entire situation is being used to damage Victoria during a painful marital dispute."

Elena paused the video.

"She's making Victoria the victim again."

Naomi did not look worried.

"Let her."

Elena stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because she just made three statements we can test against evidence."

Dana's laptop chimed.

"And because I may have the payment."

Everyone moved closer.

A company called Halston Media Advisory had received seventy-five thousand dollars that morning.

The sender was a Delaware trust.

Dana traced the trust's banking intermediary.

It matched Northlight Risk Management.

Julian exhaled slowly.

"So fifty thousand before the gala and seventy-five thousand before the recantation."

Naomi nodded.

"A jury would find that interesting."

Grant looked toward Elena.

"This will help clear you."

Elena did not answer.

She was beginning to hate the phrase clear you.

It suggested she had somehow become cloudy through her own actions.

Naomi's assistant entered carrying a padded envelope.

"This was delivered by courier for Ms. Marquez."

Naomi frowned.

"From whom?"

"No return name."

Julian immediately moved toward it.

Naomi stopped him with one look.

"My office."

She opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was an old smartphone.

A note was taped to the back.

I TOOK THE MONEY BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID.

I KEPT THE ORIGINAL BECAUSE I WAS MORE AFRAID OF HER.

BROOKE.

Naomi powered on the phone.

There was only one saved voicemail.

The timestamp was six days before the gala.

Victoria's voice played through the speaker.

"Brooke, when Elena's bag is opened, I need you close enough to see inside."

A pause followed.

"The moment the necklace appears, say it loudly."

Victoria sounded calm.

Almost bored.

"Do not touch the bag."

Another pause.

"Do not ask questions."

Then came the sentence that changed the room.

"And if Grant starts asking about Marquez Community Logistics, tell him Elena approached you about an investment opportunity."

Elena stopped breathing.

The message continued.

"We need the story to exist before he asks the question."

Naomi ended playback.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Dana finally broke the silence.

"That is conspiracy planning in her own voice."

Julian nodded.

"And it proves the financial frame was connected to the necklace frame."

Grant looked sick.

"She knew I was investigating."

Elena looked at him.

"Of course she knew."

"No."

Grant shook his head.

"I told almost nobody."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"Who knew?"

Grant counted.

"Dana."

"Obviously."

"My private attorney."

"Who else?"

Grant hesitated.

"Owen."

Elena stared at him.

"The man who disappeared."

Grant nodded.

"And one board member."

Naomi leaned forward.

"Which board member?"

Grant's expression hardened.

"Patricia Knox."

The room went silent again.

May you like

Victoria had not discovered Grant's investigation by accident.

Grant had told one of the women standing beside her in the deleted footage.
