Chapter 3 — The Nursery Door Was Already Open

Chapter 3 — The Nursery Door Was Already Open
No one followed her at first.
That was the strange part.
A family that loud a minute ago suddenly forgot how to move.
Olivia climbed each step slowly, one hand steady on her belly, the other brushing the railing like it was the only real thing left in her life.
The nursery door was open.
She didn’t remember opening it.
Inside, the room was perfect.
Too perfect.
Soft blue walls. A crib untouched. A rocking chair positioned like someone had been waiting to confess inside it.
And on the dresser—
The baby monitor.
Still recording.
Still alive.
Olivia picked it up.
Her fingers shook—but her voice didn’t.
“Play it again.”
For a second, nothing happened.
Then the monitor crackled.
Jason’s voice.
Closer this time. Clearer.
“I told you, Vanessa. Once the baby is born, I’ll file for full control of the assets. Olivia won’t fight it. She never does.”
A pause.
Then the woman again.
“And your mother?”
A bitter laugh.
“She thinks she’s leading this. Let her. She’s the distraction.”
Downstairs, a chair scraped.
Someone finally stood.
Olivia didn’t move.
Because something inside her had already stopped reacting.
The monitor continued.
Jason’s voice lowered.
“Paternity doubt was her idea. It made everything easier. Olivia is emotional right now—she’ll accept anything if she thinks she’s unstable.”
Silence.
Then Vanessa:
“And the money transfer?”
“Already in motion.”
That was the moment Olivia closed her eyes.
Not in pain.
In confirmation.
Everything made sense now.
The humiliation at dinner.
The cold accusations.
The silence from Jason.
Even Margaret’s cruelty wasn’t random—it was part of something rehearsed.
A system.
A plan.
A collapse carefully staged.
Behind her, footsteps finally entered the nursery.
Jason.
“Olivia—turn that off.”
His voice wasn’t strong anymore.
It was desperate.
She didn’t look at him.
“Was any part of me real to you?” she asked quietly.
Jason stopped.
That question hurt more than anger.
“I loved you,” he said.
But even he didn’t believe it enough to finish strongly.
Olivia turned around slowly.
Eight months pregnant. Exhausted. Betrayed.
But not broken.
“I’m not asking what you said,” she replied.
“I’m asking what I was to you.”
May you like
Jason didn’t answer.
And that silence gave her everything she needed.
