“She humiliated her pregnant daughter-in-law… then the baby monitor exposed her son.”

Chapter 2 — The Voice That Shouldn’t Exist

The room didn’t move.

Not a single fork hit a plate. Not a breath sounded normal.

Jason’s voice—coming from the baby monitor upstairs—hung in the air like a second truth no one had been invited to hear.

“I can move the money before she figures out about Vanessa.”

Margaret’s face shifted first.

Confusion. Then alarm. Then something sharper—fear.

Jason went rigid.

“That’s not—” he started, but the sentence died in his throat.

Olivia didn’t look at him. She couldn’t. Her eyes stayed locked on the ceiling, as if the nursery itself had betrayed him.

The baby monitor crackled again.

Silence.

Then static.

Then nothing.

But it was already too late.

“Vanessa?” Olivia finally whispered.

Her voice wasn’t loud. That’s what made it dangerous.

Jason pushed back his chair too fast. It fell behind him with a hard crack.

“I can explain,” he said.

But Margaret spoke first.

“There is nothing to explain. That’s not what you think it is.”

Olivia laughed once—short, broken.

“You just said I don’t even know if my baby is his… and now there’s money… and another woman?”

Jason stepped toward her.

“Olivia, please—”

She raised a hand.

Not to stop him.

To protect herself from collapsing.

“Don’t come closer.”

For the first time that night, Jason looked scared.

Not of his mother.

Not of the situation.

But of her silence.

Because Olivia wasn’t crying anymore.

She was listening.

And thinking.

Upstairs, the baby monitor suddenly clicked again—like something replaying on loop.

This time, a different voice came through.

A woman.

Soft.

Familiar.

“Jason, if she finds out about the offshore account, we lose everything.”

Olivia’s breath stopped completely.

And then she turned.

May you like

Slowly.

Toward the stairs.
