Chapter 19: The Serpent's Gala

The Whitmore Foundation’s Winter Gala was the social event of the season. Held in the grand ballroom of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, the room was a dazzling ocean of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and Seattle’s elite.
Claire Sterling moved through the crowd like a queen. She wore a stunning emerald-green gown, her charm weaponized as she networked with senators, board members, and hospital directors. She felt the thrilling, addictive rush of absolute victory.
The digital trigger was set for 10:00 PM. In exactly twenty minutes, a massive encrypted file transfer would drain the Whitmore Foundation's reserves, routing the funds through Ryan’s personal IP address directly into an offshore account. The FBI’s white-collar crime division had already been anonymously tipped off. They were waiting in the lobby.
Claire spotted Maya standing near the grand staircase. Maya looked pale, anxious, and exhausted. She kept looking over her shoulder, her hands trembling as she held a glass of sparkling cider.
Perfect, Claire thought. The psychological warfare worked.
Claire glided over to Maya, wearing a mask of faux concern. "Maya, darling. You look terribly pale. Are you feeling alright? Ryan mentioned you've been having some... anxiety lately."
Maya flinched, looking away. "I'm fine, Claire. It's just... the crowds. And the memories. Evelyn used to host this gala."
"Evelyn is gone," Claire purred, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a hypnotic, comforting whisper. "But you know, trauma can make us see things that aren't there. Have you been seeing things, Maya?"
Maya’s breath hitched. She looked at Claire, tears pooling in her eyes. "How did you know?"
"I know a lot of things," Claire smiled, entirely predatory. "Why don't we step out onto the terrace? Get some fresh air. You look like you're about to faint."
Maya nodded weakly, allowing Claire to guide her through the heavy French doors onto the secluded, freezing stone terrace overlooking the Seattle skyline. The music from the ballroom was muffled behind the thick glass.
Claire checked her diamond watch. 9:55 PM. Five minutes until Ryan was arrested, and Maya was completely isolated.
"It's a long way down," Claire noted casually, looking over the stone balustrade at the street ten stories below. "A woman in the throes of a psychotic break... overwhelmed by public pressure... it would be a tragedy. But a believable one."
Maya stepped back from the ledge. The trembling in her hands suddenly stopped. She took a deep breath of the freezing air, and when she looked back at Claire, the fear in her eyes was completely gone.
"You wear her perfume," Maya said, her voice no longer shaking. It was hard as diamond. "But you don't have her patience."
Claire frowned, a sliver of confusion piercing her confidence. "Excuse me?"
"You moved too fast, Claire. Or should I call you Victoria?" Maya asked, tilting her head.
Claire’s breath caught. The emerald gown suddenly felt suffocating. "What did you say?"
The French doors opened. Ryan stepped out onto the terrace, followed closely by Thomas Reynolds and two men wearing earpieces and FBI badges.
"Your digital trigger failed, Claire," Ryan said, walking to stand beside his wife. He pulled a small digital tablet from his tuxedo pocket and held it up. "Reynolds’ tech team quarantined the merger files the night you dropped off the scarf. When you tried to route the funds to Zurich just now, you actually authorized a transfer of the Sterling Trust’s entire capital directly to the FBI’s seizure accounts."
Claire stared at the tablet, her mind violently short-circuiting. The impenetrable plan. The flawless execution. It was all a mirage. They had played her.
"You arrogant little fool," Claire hissed, dropping the polished facade, her face contorting into a mask of pure rage, mirroring Evelyn exactly. "You think you can outsmart me? I built an empire from nothing! I am the rightful heir to the Whitmore legacy!"
"You're a sociopath with a trust fund," Maya corrected sharply. "And you're done."
Reynolds stepped forward, producing a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "Claire Sterling, you are under arrest for attempted grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent."
May you like
As the cold steel snapped around Claire’s wrists, she looked at Ryan and Maya. She expected to see fear. She expected to see relief. But she only saw pity.
They weren't afraid of the monsters anymore. They knew exactly how to break them.
