Chapter 18: The Hunter's Trap

Maya Whitmore did not panic.

Two years ago, a pearl-gray scarf smelling of Evelyn’s perfume would have sent her spiraling into a panic attack. She would have locked the doors, drawn the blinds, and sat in the corner trembling.

But Maya was no longer the frightened prey Evelyn had preyed upon. She was a mother who had survived a siege.

"Put it in a Ziploc bag," Maya told Ryan, her voice dead steady. "Don't touch it more than you have to. We need to preserve any fingerprints or DNA."

Ryan looked at his wife, a surge of profound admiration cutting through his anxiety. He grabbed a plastic bag from the kitchen, sealed the scarf inside, and locked it in the digital safe in his home office.

"Someone delivered this by hand," Ryan said, pacing the hardwood floor. "We have a gated driveway. They had to walk past the front cameras."

Ryan pulled up the security feed on his laptop. He scrubbed back to the time they were putting Oliver to sleep. At 7:42 PM, the camera glitched. The screen dissolved into static for exactly two minutes. When the feed returned, the box was on the console table.

"A localized Wi-Fi jammer," Ryan muttered, his jaw clenching. "Whoever dropped this off knew exactly what security system we use and how to blind it. This isn't a prank. This is professional."

Maya stood behind him, looking at the screen. "Who has the resources to hire professionals, knows Evelyn's perfume, and knows the layout of our house?"

They both went completely silent. The realization hit them simultaneously.

"Claire Sterling," Ryan whispered.

"She was here for dinner last week," Maya noted, her mind racing. "She asked to use the restroom in the foyer. She was alone near the console table. She could have left a backdoor device on the network router."

Ryan immediately reached for his phone. He dialed Thomas Reynolds. The former FBI agent had retired after Evelyn’s trial and now ran an elite private security firm in Seattle.

"Reynolds. We have a problem," Ryan said the moment the man answered.

Thirty minutes later, Reynolds was in their living room, running a specialized scanner over the router. The device beeped rapidly.

"You were right, Maya," Reynolds grunted, pulling a tiny, black, magnetic microchip off the back of the router. "Military-grade network cloner. Whoever put this here has been reading every email you send, watching your cameras, and monitoring your financial transfers."

"It's Claire Sterling," Ryan said, his voice hard. "She merged her trust with the Foundation today. She has total access to our internal systems."

Reynolds frowned deeply. "I ran her background, Ryan. Claire Sterling grew up in foster care, went to Stanford on a full scholarship, built a tech company, and sold it for millions. She has no connection to Evelyn."

"Evelyn’s ledger had a blank spot," Maya interjected suddenly, her eyes wide as the puzzle pieces snapped together. "Remember? During the trial. There was an offshore account in Geneva that the FBI couldn't trace. It paid out two hundred thousand dollars a year for fifteen years to an anonymous educational trust. The prosecution assumed it was a bribe."

"It wasn't a bribe," Ryan realized, the blood freezing in his veins. "It was tuition. Evelyn was funding someone. She was raising a proxy."

Reynolds bagged the microchip. "If Claire is Evelyn’s ghost, she isn't just here to scare you. She's here to finish the job. We need to shut her out of the network immediately."

"No," Maya said fiercely.

Both men turned to look at her.

"If we shut her out, she knows we're onto her. She’ll vanish, and she’ll try again from the shadows," Maya said, her voice cold and strategic. "Evelyn’s biggest weakness was her arrogance. She always assumed I was weak. If Claire is her protégé, she’ll assume the exact same thing."

Ryan stepped toward his wife. "What are you suggesting?"

May you like

"I'm suggesting we let Claire think her plan is working," Maya said. "We feed her false network data. We let her think I'm breaking down. And when she steps into the light to deal the final blow... we crush her."

Reynolds smiled, a slow, dangerous grin. "I'll get my tech team to mirror the network. We're going hunting."
