Chapter 17: The Echo in the Glass

Two thousand miles away, the ADX Florence Supermax facility in Colorado sat like a concrete fortress against the desolate landscape. It was the highest security prison in the country, designed to break the spirits of the most dangerous inmates on Earth.

In a stark, windowless visitation room, Evelyn Whitmore sat in a bolted metal chair. She was thinner now, her cheekbones sharp and hollow, her orange jumpsuit a humiliating contrast to the luxury she had once commanded. But as the heavy steel door on the visitor's side opened, a spark of the old, venomous fire returned to her eyes.

Claire Sterling walked into the room.

She did not look repulsed by the sterile, depressing environment. She sat down smoothly, picking up the heavy black telephone receiver that connected through the thick, bulletproof glass.

"You look well, Mother," Claire said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion.

Evelyn picked up her receiver. "Do not call me that in here, Victoria. The walls have ears."

Claire—whose real name, Victoria, was buried beneath layers of forged adoption records, offshore identity creation, and millions of dollars in bribes—offered a thin, chilling smile. She was not Evelyn's biological daughter. She was a prodigy Evelyn had hand-selected from a prestigious, corrupt boarding school in Switzerland fifteen years ago. A girl with zero empathy, boundless ambition, and a mind that worked exactly like Evelyn's.

Evelyn had funded her entire life, creating a phantom heir, a contingency plan in case Ryan ever proved too weak to inherit the empire. She had built Claire Sterling from the ground up to be the ultimate weapon.

"The integration is complete," Claire said softly, staring through the glass. "Ryan signed the papers today. The Sterling Trust is now officially tethered to the Whitmore Foundation. The Trojan horse is inside the gates."

Evelyn’s lips curled into a rare, genuine smile. "Excellent. The boy is so desperate to wash his hands of my sins that he embraces anyone who offers a polished halo. Does he suspect?"

"Not a thing," Claire replied. "But I left a small gift for the wife tonight. A scarf. Drenched in your scent."

Evelyn chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "Good. Let the paranoia set in. Maya is a fragile, hysterical creature. When she starts seeing ghosts, Ryan will think she’s relapsing into postpartum psychosis. He will doubt her. That is when you strike."

"In three weeks, at the Foundation's Winter Gala, I will trigger the financial reroute," Claire explained, her eyes gleaming with cold calculation. "The algorithms I embedded in the merger contract will begin siphoning the foundation's assets into the offshore shell accounts we set up in Zurich. It will be coded to look exactly like Ryan is embezzling the funds. The FBI will arrest him on stage."

"And the child?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous hiss.

"Oliver will be taken into protective custody. With Ryan in federal prison and Maya institutionalized for a breakdown, I will file for guardianship as the primary foundation partner and a designated godmother proxy," Claire said. "I will raise him. I will mold him. Just as you molded me."

Evelyn placed her hand against the bulletproof glass. Claire mirrored the gesture.

"Burn their lives to the ground, Victoria," Evelyn whispered. "Take everything."

Claire hung up the phone, stood, and walked out of the prison without looking back. She had a family to destroy.
