Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Inside the Betrayal.

The audio forensic report took thirty-six hours.

Rebecca experienced every one of them.

She listened to the recording only twice more.

Each time, her own younger voice sounded colder than she remembered herself ever being.

"Then give me the voting authority and I will control it for him."

"He never needs to know."

Daniel had spent years accusing Rebecca's father of building invisible chains around the company.

The recording appeared to prove Rebecca had helped.

Nora refused to let her spiral.

"Context first," she repeated.

"Authenticity second."

"Interpretation third."

Rebecca almost laughed.

"That is not the order most people use."

"Which is why most people should not litigate for a living."

The investigator confirmed the voice signatures were highly consistent with Rebecca and her father.

That was the bad news.

The better news came from waveform analysis.

There were discontinuities.

Two phrases had been joined.

Background noise shifted between clauses.

The file had almost certainly been edited.

Rebecca closed her eyes when Nora delivered the result.

"Can we recover the original?"

"Not from this file."

"Then Daniel can still release it."

"He can."

"And most people will hear what they want to hear before experts explain waveforms."

Nora nodded.

"Yes."

Rebecca stood by the window.

"Do we confront him?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because we don't know who sent it to you."

Rebecca turned.

"You think Daniel did?"

"Maybe."

"Maybe someone wanted you to know what he has."

"Maybe someone wanted to scare you into reacting."

"And maybe the person who edited it has the original."

Rebecca felt a chill.

At 11:30 a.m., Chloe called her attorney, not Rebecca.

Chloe's attorney called Nora.

An hour later, all four women met in a neutral conference room.

Chloe placed a small envelope on the table.

"Daniel left this in my safe six months ago," she said.

Nora looked at Chloe's attorney.

"Your client is voluntarily providing this?"

"Yes."

"And you have documented chain of custody?"

"Yes."

Nora opened the envelope.

Inside was a second USB drive.

Rebecca stared at it.

Chloe looked at her.

"I think it has the full recording."

Rebecca's throat tightened.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel told me the copy he kept for leverage was shorter than the original."

Nora's expression sharpened.

"When did he tell you that?"

"Months ago."

"Why were you discussing it?"

Chloe looked embarrassed.

"He had been drinking."

"He said Rebecca's family had tried to control him from the beginning."

"He played me the short clip."

"Then he said the long version was less useful because it made Rebecca sound reasonable."

Rebecca felt the room go still.

"He said that?"

Chloe nodded.

"Almost exactly."

Nora looked at the second drive.

"Where did he get the recording?"

"I don't know."

"He said he found old backup files after Arthur died."

Rebecca's chest tightened at her father's name.

"Did he say why he left the drive with you?"

"He said he didn't want it in the house if you ever went looking through his office."

Rebecca almost laughed at the absurdity.

For twenty-three years, she had barely opened Daniel's desk drawers without asking.

He had hidden evidence from an invasion that existed only in his imagination.

Nora sent the drive for forensic imaging.

Two hours later, they listened to the longer recording.

Arthur Mercer's voice came first.

"Daniel is not ready to control this much capital without oversight."

Rebecca's younger voice answered.

"Then give me the voting authority and I will control it for him until the lenders are protected."

Arthur replied.

"He will hate that."

Rebecca said, "Then he never needs to know the authority is mine unless he violates the covenants."

There was a long pause.

Then Rebecca continued.

"If he does what he promised, I will never use it."

Arthur's voice softened.

"And if he doesn't?"

Rebecca answered.

"Then I protect the trust, the employees, and Ethan."

The recording continued for eleven minutes.

Rebecca heard herself argue for narrower controls than her father wanted.

She heard herself insist Daniel retain operational authority.

She heard Arthur warn her that Daniel's greatest weakness was not greed but humiliation.

"He can survive being poor," Arthur said.

"I am not sure he can survive feeling small."

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Her father had understood Daniel with painful clarity.

At the end of the conversation, Rebecca said the words Daniel had cut from their context.

"I don't want to control my husband."

"I want to make sure fear doesn't control him first."

The audio ended.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Chloe looked at Rebecca.

"He knew the whole recording existed."

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

"And he kept playing me the edited part."

Rebecca looked at the drive.

"Yes."

Chloe laughed once, bitterly.

"He lied even when the truth was sitting in his safe."

Rebecca did not respond.

Something about the full recording hurt more than the edited version.

Her father's voice was alive again for eleven minutes.

She could hear the patience, concern, and irritation she had once taken for granted.

Arthur had died four years earlier.

Daniel cried at the funeral.

He delivered a eulogy praising Arthur's discipline and integrity.

Then at some point afterward, Daniel apparently found the recording and cut it into a weapon.

Rebecca felt grief sharpen into anger.

"Can he legally release the edited clip?" she asked Nora.

"He can physically release it."

"Whether he creates legal exposure depends on what he says about it and why."

"But our better move is not to threaten him."

"It is to preserve the full recording and expert report."

Rebecca nodded.

Chloe's attorney spoke.

"My client also has messages."

Chloe took out her phone.

"Daniel told me last week that if Rebecca would not settle, he would release the clip to a financial reporter and say she had secretly controlled Mercer Holdings for sixteen years."

Nora's face hardened.

"Did he connect that threat to settlement terms?"

"Yes."

"Show me."

Chloe handed the phone to her attorney, who displayed a preserved message export.

Daniel's text was short.

IF SHE WANTS TO PLAY QUEEN, SHE CAN EXPLAIN THAT RECORDING TO THE MARKET.

Another message followed.

SHE'LL GIVE UP THE SHARE OPTION BEFORE SHE LETS ETHAN HEAR IT.

Rebecca stared at the words.

Ethan.

Daniel believed the threat worked because Rebecca would fear her son's judgment more than the market's.

He was right about the fear.

He was wrong about what she would do with it.

"Send these to Nora under whatever protocol counsel requires," Rebecca said.

Chloe looked at her.

"You're not going to give up the option?"

"No."

"Even if he releases it?"

Rebecca met her gaze.

"No."

Chloe looked almost relieved.

"Good."

Rebecca raised an eyebrow.

Chloe swallowed.

"Sorry."

"I just don't want him to win by doing this."

Rebecca's voice was cool.

"Be careful with that word."

"What word?"

"Win."

Rebecca stood.

"That is how Daniel turns every disagreement into permission."

The women left separately.

Rebecca returned home and found Ethan waiting outside her apartment.

"Nora told me there was an update."

Rebecca let him in.

"There is."

She did not hide the recording.

She played him both versions.

First the edited clip.

Then the full conversation.

Ethan listened without interrupting.

When the full file ended, he sat back.

"Dad edited Grandpa?"

"It appears someone did."

"Mom."

"The forensic analysis shows the short version was cut."

"And Chloe says Dad knew."

"Yes."

Ethan stared at the floor.

"He was going to use that against you?"

"Apparently."

"To make you give up the trust option?"

"Yes."

Ethan stood and began pacing.

"I want to call him."

"Don't."

"Why?"

"Because nothing useful happens when you call someone only to release anger."

"He deserves it."

"Maybe."

"But you deserve not to become a delivery system for what he deserves."

Ethan stopped.

"How do you say things like that while this is happening?"

Rebecca looked at him.

"Because I have spent a lot of years learning what anger costs after the moment it feels good."

Ethan sank back into the chair.

"Are you going to use the full recording?"

"Only if necessary."

"You should release it now."

"Why?"

"So everyone knows he lied."

Rebecca shook her head.

"Then I become part of the public fight he wants."

"But he could release the fake first."

"Then we answer with facts."

Ethan looked frustrated.

"That sounds weak."

Rebecca smiled sadly.

"Restraint always looks weak to people who only understand force."

At 6:20 p.m., Samuel called.

Daniel had requested a special board session for the next morning.

"He says he has evidence the trust has secretly controlled management decisions for years," Samuel said.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

"The recording."

"You know about it?"

"Yes."

"Is it real?"

Rebecca looked at Ethan.

"The short version is edited."

Samuel exhaled.

"Can you prove that?"

"Yes."

"Then come tomorrow."

Rebecca hesitated.

"I'm not a director."

"The trust has contractual rights that Daniel is challenging."

"Company counsel can invite you for that agenda item."

Rebecca looked at the USB drive on her table.

For years, she had remained outside Daniel's boardroom because he said her presence made investors think he had married his way into credibility.

She had accepted the insult to protect his pride.

Tomorrow, Daniel planned to bring her name into that room himself.

"All right," she said.

"I'll come."

The next morning, Rebecca entered Mercer Holdings headquarters through the main lobby.

Employees recognized her.

Some smiled.

Some looked away quickly.

Some had already heard enough rumors to make eye contact uncomfortable.

Rebecca took the elevator to the forty-second floor.

The boardroom doors were closed.

Nora stood beside her holding a slim binder.

"Ready?"

Rebecca looked through the glass wall at Daniel seated at the head of the table.

He saw her.

His expression did not change.

Neither did hers.

"Yes," Rebecca said.
