Chapter 7 - The Dinner Trap.

Daniel's emergency board meeting lasted two hours and eleven minutes.
Rebecca spent those two hours at home with Nora and a pot of coffee neither of them finished.
At 10:14 a.m., Samuel sent a message.
VOTE COMPLETE.
Nothing else.
Rebecca stared at the screen.
"Ask him?" Nora said.
Rebecca shook her head.
"He'll call when he can."
At 10:21, Mercer Holdings issued an internal notice.
Daniel Mercer would remain chief executive officer but would temporarily lose unilateral contracting authority, discretionary expense authority, and control over related-party transactions pending the audit committee's review.
He had not been removed.
He had been contained.
Rebecca read the notice twice.
She did not feel victorious.
She felt tired.
Nora watched her.
"He will see this as a public humiliation."
"It was sent internally."
"That won't matter."
Rebecca knew she was right.
Daniel's sense of dignity had never depended on how many people saw him lose.
It depended on whether he knew someone could.
At noon, Daniel sent Rebecca an invitation.
DINNER TONIGHT - PRIVATE ROOM - 7:30.
Rebecca almost deleted it.
Then a second message arrived.
Ethan will be there.
She called her son.
"Did your father invite you to dinner?"
"Yes."
"Are you going?"
"He said he wants to apologize."
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"Did he say Chloe would be there?"
"No."
"Did he say lawyers would be there?"
"No."
"Did he say anyone else would be there?"
"No."
Rebecca glanced at Nora.
Nora shook her head.
"I don't like it," Rebecca said.
"Neither do I," Ethan replied.
"But if I don't go, he will say I refused to hear him."
Rebecca understood.
"Then I will go too."
The restaurant occupied the top floor of a private club Daniel had joined after the company went public.
He once told Rebecca membership meant he had finally entered rooms that used to make him wait outside.
Rebecca had never liked the place.
The staff always seemed trained to recognize money faster than people.
She arrived at 7:25 wearing a simple black dress and pearl earrings.
Ethan was already in the lobby.
"Dad texted that he's upstairs," he said.
Rebecca looked at him.
"If this becomes ugly, we leave."
"Agreed."
The private dining room held six place settings.
Rebecca stopped in the doorway.
Daniel sat at the head of the table.
Chloe sat two seats away.
Miles Grant was beside Daniel.
Across from him sat a public relations consultant Rebecca recognized from television interviews.
The sixth chair was empty.
Ethan's face hardened.
"You said family dinner."
Daniel stood.
"It is."
Rebecca looked at Miles.
"Is this a legal meeting?"
Miles looked uncomfortable.
"Daniel asked me to attend as counsel."
Rebecca turned toward the door.
"Then my counsel should be present."
Daniel raised a hand.
"Rebecca, please."
She stopped.
"I invited Miles because I want everything clear."
"And the PR consultant?"
Daniel smiled thinly.
"She is here because this situation is becoming public."
Rebecca looked at the woman.
The consultant offered a careful nod.
"Ms. Mercer."
Rebecca did not sit.
"Why is Chloe here?"
Chloe's expression was unreadable.
Daniel answered.
"Because we should stop pretending she is not part of the situation."
Rebecca almost admired the audacity.
"You mean the situation you created."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Ethan pulled out a chair for his mother.
"Let's hear him."
Rebecca sat.
The first ten minutes were almost normal.
Wine was poured.
Bread arrived.
Daniel asked Ethan about Chicago.
Ethan answered in short sentences.
Chloe barely spoke.
Then Daniel folded his hands.
"I asked everyone here because I want to end the chaos."
Rebecca glanced at Miles.
"Interesting guest list for reducing chaos."
Daniel ignored the remark.
"The company cannot survive a public family war."
"Then don't have one," Rebecca said.
"That's why I am proposing a settlement tonight."
Miles shifted in his chair.
Rebecca noticed.
"Have you shown Miles the proposal?"
Daniel looked at his attorney.
Miles answered carefully.
"I have seen a draft."
Rebecca nodded.
"And do you advise me to discuss settlement terms without my counsel?"
Miles did not hesitate.
"No."
Daniel shot him an irritated look.
Rebecca almost smiled.
"Then why are we here?"
Daniel leaned forward.
"Because there are things lawyers make harder."
"Such as?"
"Family."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"You asked me to sign a false statement three days ago."
Daniel's face tightened.
"It was not false."
"Grandpa never said that to me."
"You were young."
"I was twenty-one."
Daniel ignored him.
He turned to Rebecca.
"I will give you twenty-five million dollars, the Connecticut house, and a clean divorce."
Chloe looked at him sharply.
Rebecca stared at Daniel.
"You cannot give me the Connecticut house."
Daniel's jaw flexed.
"Here we go again."
Rebecca looked at Chloe.
"The trust owns sixty percent."
Chloe closed her eyes briefly.
Daniel slammed his palm flat against the table.
The sound was sharp, but no one moved dramatically.
The staff member outside the door glanced in.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Fine."
"I will buy out the trust's interest."
Rebecca remained calm.
"With what liquidity?"
The question landed exactly where she intended.
Daniel's face changed.
Miles looked down.
The PR consultant stopped taking notes.
Chloe stared at Daniel.
"What does that mean?" she asked.
Daniel ignored her.
Rebecca continued.
"The joint account transfer failed."
"Your discretionary company spending is suspended."
"The penthouse sale proceeds belong to the trust."
"And if Northstar-related payments are under review, I assume your advisers have told you not to move questionable funds."
Daniel's voice sharpened.
"You don't know anything about Northstar."
Chloe spoke quietly.
"I do."
The room went still.
Daniel turned slowly toward her.
Rebecca felt every person at the table focus on Chloe.
"What did you say?" Daniel asked.
Chloe met his eyes.
Her hands trembled slightly under the table, but her voice remained controlled.
"I know my apartment was listed in Project Harbor."
Daniel's face emptied.
Miles looked at him.
"Daniel?"
Daniel stared at Chloe.
"You went through my tablet?"
"It was open."
"You had no right."
Chloe almost laughed.
The irony was too sharp to miss.
"That's what Rebecca said you would care about."
Rebecca said nothing.
Daniel looked at her.
"You two have been talking."
"She contacted me," Rebecca said.
Daniel pushed back from the table.
"This is a setup."
Ethan's voice was low.
"You invited us."
Daniel ignored him.
He turned to the PR consultant.
"Leave."
The consultant closed her notebook.
"Daniel, I think—"
"Leave."
She stood.
Miles also rose.
"We should pause this conversation."
Daniel pointed at him.
"Sit down."
Miles stared at his client.
Then he picked up his briefcase.
"No."
The single word stunned Daniel more than an argument would have.
"Excuse me?"
"This is no longer a productive legal conversation."
Miles looked at Rebecca.
"You should speak through counsel."
Then he left with the PR consultant.
Daniel watched the door close.
The room now contained only Rebecca, Ethan, Chloe, and him.
The people whose lives had become props in his preferred story.
"What do you want?" Daniel asked Chloe.
"I want you to stop calling me and telling me what to say."
"I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
"From being dragged into this."
Chloe's expression hardened.
"You dragged me into it when you used my apartment as a business expense."
"You did work."
"Three presentations."
"That's work."
"Not enough to justify twelve thousand dollars a month in rent."
Ethan stared at his father.
"Twelve thousand?"
Daniel's face tightened.
"This is none of your business."
Ethan stood.
"You made it my business when you asked me to lie for you."
Rebecca put a hand lightly on Ethan's arm.
Not to silence him.
To steady him.
Daniel looked around the table and seemed to realize he had lost control of the room.
His next move was instinctive.
He attacked the person he believed least likely to attack back.
Rebecca.
"You think they love you now because you're writing checks?"
Rebecca stared at him.
"What?"
"Ethan is sitting beside you because he thinks the trust money will end up with him."
Ethan's face went white with anger.
"Dad."
Daniel kept going.
"Chloe is talking to you because she thinks you'll protect her."
"Nora is billing you."
"Samuel wants your votes."
"Everybody around you wants something."
Rebecca felt the cruelty of the words.
Not because they were true.
Because Daniel knew exactly where her private fear lived.
Rebecca had always wondered whether people saw her or the Mercer name.
Daniel knew that.
He used it anyway.
Ethan took a step forward.
Rebecca tightened her grip on his arm.
"Sit down," she said quietly.
Ethan looked at her.
"Mom—"
"Sit."
He obeyed.
Rebecca turned to Daniel.
"You came here to make a deal."
Daniel said nothing.
"You offered property you don't own."
"Money you may not have."
"And peace you are not capable of offering while you are threatening everyone who disagrees with you."
She stood.
"So here is my answer."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"No."
Rebecca picked up her handbag.
"All further settlement proposals go through Nora."
"You walk out that door and I stop being generous."
Rebecca looked at him.
"Daniel, generosity is not offering someone pieces of what already belongs to them."
Ethan stood beside her.
Chloe remained seated.
Rebecca looked at Chloe.
"Are you coming?"
Daniel's head snapped toward her.
Chloe looked surprised.
Rebecca clarified.
"Not with me."
"Just out of this room."
Chloe looked at Daniel.
He stared back with a mixture of anger and disbelief.
She slowly stood.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"So that's it?"
"You both turn on me?"
Chloe picked up her purse.
"You told me your wife was weak."
Daniel's expression changed.
Chloe looked at Rebecca.
Then back at him.
"You were wrong about a lot of things."
The three of them walked toward the door.
Daniel remained at the table.
Rebecca stopped once and looked back.
He was alone beneath the club's antique chandelier, surrounded by six place settings he had arranged to demonstrate control.
For the first time, he looked exactly like what he feared becoming.
A man everyone had stopped believing.
In the hallway, Ethan exhaled hard.
"I can't believe he said that about me."
Rebecca touched his shoulder.
"Neither can he."
"What does that mean?"
"It means tomorrow he will tell himself he said it because he was angry."
"And the next day he will tell himself you made him angry."
"And eventually he will remember the story instead of the choice."
Chloe stood several feet away, listening.
"Is that what he always does?" she asked.
Rebecca looked at her.
"Yes."
The elevator arrived.
Chloe did not step in with them.
"I have my own car," she said.
Rebecca nodded.
Before the doors closed, Chloe spoke.
"Rebecca."
"Yes?"
"He said something tonight before dinner."
Rebecca waited.
"He said the board couldn't touch him because he had a recording that would destroy you if it ever came out."
Ethan stared at her.
Rebecca felt the elevator suddenly become too small.
"What recording?"
Chloe shook her head.
"I don't know."
The doors began to close.
"But he said it was from sixteen years ago."
Rebecca's breath caught.
Sixteen years ago.
The rescue financing.
The trust agreement.
The year Daniel nearly lost the company.
The elevator doors closed.
Rebecca looked at Ethan.
He had heard it too.
Somewhere in the past Daniel had preserved something he believed could change the present.

And for the first time in days, Rebecca was genuinely afraid of what he might be holding.
