Chapter 5: The Turning Point

The paramedics were preparing to transport Leo to a local hospital for observation, despite Richard's insistence that they were supposed to be on a flight to Switzerland. "He needs to be stabilized here first, Mr. Sterling," the head medic insisted gently. "The flight is out of the question for at least forty-eight hours."

Richard nodded absentmindedly, his mind racing a million miles a minute. He stood up and looked down at Sarah and Maya. The security guards had dispersed, realizing the homeless mother and daughter were heroes, not vagrants.

Sarah grabbed the plastic grocery bag and took Maya's hand. "We'll get out of your way now. I'm glad your boy is okay, Mr. Sterling. Truly, I am." She offered a weak, tragic smile that broke Richard's heart all over again.

"Wait," Richard said firmly.

Sarah froze, pulling Maya slightly closer.

Richard reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed a number he knew by heart. It rang only once before his chief of staff answered.

"David," Richard said into the phone, his voice echoing with an authority that left no room for argument. "Cancel the flight to Geneva. Have the company cars brought to the curb at Terminal Four. We are going to Mt. Sinai Hospital for Leo's observation."

"Right away, sir," David replied. "Will there be anything else?"

"Yes," Richard said, his eyes locking onto Sarah's. "Call the property managers at the Upper East Side penthouse. Tell them to fully stock the fridge and have the guest wing prepared immediately. I'm bringing guests home."

He hung up the phone and slipped it back into his pocket. He took two steps forward, closing the distance between himself and the exhausted mother.

"You are not going back to the subway," Richard said, his tone gentle but leaving absolutely no room for refusal. "You are not sleeping in an airport terminal. Not tonight, not ever again."

Sarah looked at him in disbelief. "Mr. Sterling, we couldn't possibly—we don't take charity. We're just—"

"This isn't charity," Richard interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. He knelt down so he was eye-level with Maya. "Your daughter gave me my entire world back today. No amount of money I have could buy the knowledge she possessed, or the courage she showed. I lost a lot of things today... my flight, my schedule, my pride." He looked back up at Sarah. "You lost your son to the very demon I am fighting right now. You fought it on your own. You shouldn't have had to."

He stood up and gently took the plastic grocery bag from Sarah's trembling hands.

"From this moment on, you are not alone," Richard said, offering his free hand to the mother. "My family is your family. Whatever you need, whatever Maya needs, it's done. Please. Let me do this for you. Let me thank Toby."

Tears streamed down Sarah's face anew, but this time, they weren't tears of terror or grief. Slowly, with a trembling arm, she reached out and took the billionaire's hand. As they walked out of the terminal together, following the paramedics and the little boy in the wheelchair, a new chapter was beginning for all of them—forged in tragedy, but bound by a miracle.
Here are chapters 6 through 10, continuing the story of Richard, Leo, Sarah, and Maya.
