Chapter 16: The Star Box
Months passed, and the Toby Initiative grew from a local charity into a formidable force in pediatric healthcare. The engineers had taken Maya’s advice to heart. The new Toby Batteries didn't look like terrifying medical equipment. They were housed in smooth, brightly colored casings, adorned with glow-in-the-dark stars, and their warning alarms sounded like a gentle music box before escalating to a louder alert.
Maya and Leo became the unofficial pediatric ambassadors for the foundation. On a crisp autumn afternoon, the two children walked the halls of Mt. Sinai’s pediatric wing, accompanied by Richard and Sarah. They were there to deliver a battery to a new patient—a terrified five-year-old girl named Chloe who had just been diagnosed with a severe respiratory condition.
When they entered the room, Chloe was crying, clinging to her mother as a nurse tried to explain the loud, humming ventilator beside the bed.
Maya didn't wait for the adults to intervene. She walked right up to Chloe’s bed, holding the newly painted Toby Battery.
"Hi, I'm Maya, and this is my best friend, Leo," she said cheerfully. "We brought you a Star Box."
Chloe sniffled, looking cautiously at the brightly colored device. "What's a Star Box?"
"It’s a magic box that keeps the bad machines from turning off," Leo explained proudly, pointing to the scar on his neck. "I have one in my room. When the lights go out, the Star Box glows, and it plays a song so you know you're safe."
Maya set the device on the nightstand and turned off the overhead hospital lights. Instantly, the painted stars on the battery began to glow with a warm, comforting green light. Chloe’s tears stopped immediately. She reached out, mesmerized by the glowing stars.
