Chapter 19: One Year Later
The one-year anniversary of the airport incident fell on a beautiful, clear summer day.
Instead of a frantic rush through a terminal, Richard, Leo, Sarah, and Maya were standing in the middle of a massive, sunlit warehouse in Brooklyn. Dozens of transport trucks were lined up at the loading docks, their sides emblazoned with the logo of the Toby Initiative.
Today marked the official nationwide expansion of the foundation. They were shipping thousands of Toby Batteries to pediatric hospitals in all fifty states.
Leo was running down the aisles of pallets, playing tag with Maya. He was no longer bound to the heavy, motorized wheelchair. Thanks to a grueling physical therapy regimen and the sheer willpower to keep up with his best friend, Leo had regained his strength. He still required the tracheostomy valve, but the brilliant engineers at Sterling Innovations had downsized his equipment so efficiently that it now fit into a customized, lightweight backpack.
Richard and Sarah watched the kids run, standing side-by-side near the podium where they were scheduled to give a press conference. Over the past twelve months, their relationship had evolved into a beautiful, unshakable partnership. They were co-directors, confidants, and family.
"Can you believe it's only been a year?" Sarah asked, watching Maya tackle Leo onto a pile of padded shipping blankets, both kids erupting into uncontrollable laughter.
"Sometimes it feels like a lifetime ago," Richard replied. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He didn't open it right away, just held it in his palm. "Sarah, you told me once that Toby left a legacy. But you built this. You built this family. You gave me my son back, and you gave me a reason to use my life for something good."
Sarah looked at the velvet box, her breath catching in her throat.
"I don't just want to be your business partner," Richard said softly, looking deeply into her eyes. "I want us to be a real family. Officially. Forever. Will you marry me?"
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears of absolute joy. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around Richard’s neck, kissing him deeply as the warehouse workers around them broke into spontaneous applause.
Hearing the commotion, Maya and Leo sprinted over.
"Did she say yes?!" Leo yelled, bouncing on his heels.

Maya beamed, wrapping her arms around her mother’s waist. For the first time in her life, she didn't have to worry about tomorrow. She had a brother, a father, and a future brighter than she had ever imagined.
