Chapter 1: The Word That Broke the Illusion

Chapter 1: The Word That Broke the Illusion

The ballroom remained suspended in stunned silence.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The billionaire's son—the child who had gone six years without speaking in public—was clinging to a housekeeper while tears soaked the front of her uniform.

"Mommy."

The word echoed through the grand hall long after Noah had spoken it.

Logan Mercer felt as though the marble floor had disappeared beneath him.

Vanessa recovered first.

Her smile returned almost instantly, polished and practiced.

"Oh, sweetheart," she laughed nervously, stepping forward. "He's confused. Children sometimes call caregivers 'Mommy.' Isn't that adorable?"

Noah's body stiffened.

The moment Vanessa reached toward him, he buried his face even deeper into Marina's shoulder.

His small hands trembled violently.

Marina instinctively wrapped one arm around him.

"I'm sorry, sir," she whispered to Logan. "I don't know why he's doing this."

But she didn't push Noah away.

She couldn't.

Every instinct inside her told her the terrified little boy needed protection.

Logan stared at his son.

He had never seen Noah hold anyone that tightly.

Not him.

Not Vanessa.

Not therapists.

Not teachers.

Only this woman.

Then something happened that made every guest uneasy.

Noah slowly lifted his head.

His blue eyes locked onto his father's.

And he spoke again.

"Daddy..."

Another impossible word.

Then, in a voice barely louder than a whisper—

"Please... don't make me go with her."

Every eye turned toward Vanessa.

Her smile finally cracked.

"What is he talking about?" she demanded. "He's frightened. Someone has obviously been manipulating him."

Logan looked at his son.

"Noah," he asked softly, kneeling in front of him, "who are you afraid of?"

The child didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he raised one trembling finger.

May you like

And pointed directly at Vanessa.

The ballroom erupted into horrified whispers.
