Chapter 5: A New Beginning

Two years later, I stood on the balcony of my Mission Bay condo, watching the sun rise over the bay.
The home they had tried to take from me had become my sanctuary.
I finalized my divorce months earlier.
The court confirmed that the condo remained entirely mine.
I also established the Emily Foundation, a nonprofit that helps survivors of domestic violence and financial abuse find legal assistance and emergency housing.
Maya became one of its first board members.
We often talked about how close we had come to losing hope.
One afternoon, she smiled and asked, "Do you ever think about that dinner?"
I looked toward the water.
"Sometimes."
"And?"
"I remember believing my life was ending."
I paused before smiling.
"But it was actually the beginning."
The Caldwells lost their wealth, their influence, and the lies that had protected them for years.
I lost only one thing.
