Chapter 1: The Flash Drive

The front door swung open as sheriff's deputies rushed inside. Their flashlights swept across the elegant dining room, stopping on the shattered porcelain scattered across the hardwood floor and the blood running down my face.

One deputy immediately guided me toward the kitchen while another ordered Adrian to step away from the table.

"I didn't mean to hurt her," Adrian insisted.

The deputy glanced at the broken plate.

"You can explain that downtown."

As Adrian was placed in handcuffs, his mother cried dramatically, accusing me of destroying the family. His father remained silent, refusing to meet anyone's eyes.

Before giving my statement, I slipped the black flash drive into the hidden pocket inside my purse.

No one noticed.

Except Maya.

She gave me the slightest nod.

Hours later, after receiving stitches at the emergency room, I drove to my condo. My hands still shook as I plugged the flash drive into my laptop.

It contained hundreds of files.

Bank records.

Property deeds.

Recorded phone calls.

Security footage.

Every folder carried the Caldwell family name.

The oldest recordings dated back nearly fifteen years.

One video showed Adrian's father threatening a business partner into signing over valuable vineyard property.

Another captured Adrian's mother coaching relatives on how to pressure elderly family members into changing their wills.

But one folder stood out above all the others.

Its title simply read:

"Emily."

Emily wasn't a business associate.

She was Adrian's first wife.

Everyone had told me she died in a tragic boating accident six years earlier.

The first video proved otherwise.

Emily sat in a hotel room, terrified.

"If anything happens to me," she said into the camera, "the Caldwells are responsible."

I felt every hair on my arms stand up.

She hadn't recorded a goodbye.

She had recorded evidence.

And someone had spent years making sure no one ever saw it.
