The next morning, I met Maya at a quiet café before sunrise.
She looked exhausted.
"I've wanted to leave that family for years," she admitted. "Emily trusted me before she disappeared."
"What really happened to her?"
Maya lowered her voice.
"Emily discovered Adrian had been transferring money through fake companies owned by his parents. When she threatened to report them, she vanished."
"The boating accident..."
"...was the story they sold everyone."
According to Maya, there had never been a public investigation.
The family's attorneys handled everything.
The death certificate was issued quickly.
No one asked questions.
"They thought they'd buried the truth forever."
That afternoon we met with a detective from the county's Major Crimes Unit.
For nearly four hours, investigators copied every file from the flash drive.
The detective looked at me seriously.
"This isn't just domestic violence anymore."
"What is it?"
He closed the folder.
"It could become one of the largest financial fraud investigations in this county."
Within forty-eight hours, search warrants were issued for every Caldwell property.
News helicopters circled above the vineyard.
