CHAPTER 8 THE CONTRACT THAT DESTROYED HIS PRIDE

The room remained silent after my father revealed the agreement.

Not a single person moved.

Not even Andrew.

He stared at the document as if the words on the page were impossible to understand.

His entire world had been built on assumptions.

He assumed he knew me.

He assumed he owned the life we created.

He assumed his family name was the reason he had power.

But now, every belief he had carried for years was collapsing.

“You knew about this?”

Andrew finally spoke.

His voice was low.

Almost broken.

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

His eyes narrowed.

“And you never told me?”

I remained quiet.

Because that question was not about the contract.

It was about everything.

Every secret.

Every misunderstanding.

Every moment he thought he was above me.

My father stepped forward.

“Andrew.”

Andrew looked at him.

“This agreement was not created to trap you.”

“Then what was it created for?”

My father’s expression became serious.

“To protect my daughter.”

Andrew laughed bitterly.

“Protect her from me?”

Nobody answered.

And that silence was enough.

His face changed.

Because deep down, he already knew.

My father continued.

“When Mariana married you, she gave up her position in the company.”

“She stepped away from public life.”

“She chose to build a family instead of an empire.”

“But I knew the world she came from.”

“The world of business.”

“The world of powerful people.”

“The world where kindness is often mistaken for weakness.”

Andrew looked down.

For the first time, he seemed to understand.

The reason I stayed quiet was not because I was weak.

It was because I trusted him.

And he had destroyed that trust.

“I never wanted this.”

I said softly.

Andrew looked at me.

“What?”

“The money.”

“The control.”

“The power.”

“I never wanted to use any of it against you.”

I walked closer.

“I wanted a normal marriage.”

“I wanted a husband who loved me when I was just Mariana.”

“Not because I was an Escalante.”

Andrew’s expression became painful.

“But you still hid it.”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“And that was my mistake.”

He looked surprised.

“You admit that?”

“Yes.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“I should have told you the truth sooner.”

“But you also need to admit something.”

He waited.

“You never loved the real me.”

The words cut deeper than anger.

Because they were not an accusation.

They were the truth.

Andrew sat down slowly.

The powerful businessman who once controlled boardrooms now looked like a man lost inside his own mistakes.

Then the door opened.

Margaret entered.

She looked nervous.

She had probably heard enough to understand what happened.

She stopped when she saw my father.

“Mr. Escalante.”

My father nodded.

“Margaret.”

Her expression changed.

She had always spoken to me with superiority.

But now she stood in front of the person whose influence surpassed hers.

“I wanted to speak with Mariana.”

I looked at her.

“What about?”

She took a breath.

“I owe you an apology.”

The words surprised everyone.

Especially Andrew.

Margaret had never apologized to anyone.

Not once.

Not in four years.

Not even when she was clearly wrong.

She stepped closer.

“I judged you.”

I said nothing.

“I believed my family was better than yours.”

A small pause.

“I believed because you came from a different background, you were not worthy of my son.”

Her voice became softer.

“I was wrong.”

The old version of me would have been shocked.

The old version of me would have wanted those words for years.

But now?

They felt different.

Because apologies only matter when they come before the damage is done.

“I spent years trying to prove myself to you.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t.”

She looked at me.

“You never saw how much it hurt.”

The room became quiet.

“I sat at family dinners listening to jokes about my clothes.”

“I heard you criticize my manners.”

“I heard you tell people I was lucky to marry Andrew.”

Margaret looked ashamed.

“But the worst part…”

I paused.

“Was that I still defended you.”

Her eyes filled slightly.

“Why?”

“Because you were my family.”

That sentence affected her more than any anger could have.

Because it showed the difference between us.

I saw family.

They saw status.

Then Andrew’s phone rang.

Nobody expected it.

He looked at the screen.

His expression immediately changed.

“What happened?”

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face turned pale.

“What do you mean the documents were leaked?”

My father looked at me.

I understood immediately.

Something had changed.

Andrew ended the call.

“What is happening?”

Margaret asked.

He looked at all of us.

“The media has the marriage agreement.”

Silence.

“What?”

Andrew looked terrified.

“They know everything.”

My father’s expression remained calm.

“Everything?”

Andrew nodded.

“They know Mariana was the real owner behind the company.”

“They know the agreement existed.”

“They know I had no idea.”

I looked at him.

“And?”

He looked at me.

“They are calling me a fraud.”

The word stayed in the air.

Fraud.

A man who spent years pretending to build an empire.

A man who accepted praise for work he did not do.

A man who humiliated the person who protected him.

Now the world was seeing the truth.

But there was something Andrew did not know.

The leak was not an accident.

Someone had released the documents intentionally.

And I already knew who.

Because only one person benefited from destroying Andrew completely.

Brenda.

Later that evening, I sat alone in my office.

Victor entered.

“You were right.”

I looked up.

“About Brenda?”

He nodded.

“She leaked the agreement.”

I was not surprised.

“What else?”

Victor placed another folder on my desk.

“She also contacted several reporters.”

“Trying to make herself look like a victim.”

I opened the file.

There were messages.

Emails.

Private conversations.

Brenda had created an entire story.

In her version, she was innocent.

She was the woman betrayed by Andrew.

She was the woman who had no idea about the money.

She was the victim.

I slowly closed the folder.

“She really believes she can escape.”

Victor looked at me.

“What will you do?”

I stood and walked toward the window.

“I will do nothing.”

He looked confused.

“Nothing?”

I nodded.

“Let her talk.”

“Let her tell everyone her version.”

“Because eventually…”

I turned around.

“The truth always finds the people who are lying.”

Victor remained silent.

Outside, cameras were already gathering near the mansion.

Reporters were waiting.

The world wanted answers.

Andrew wanted forgiveness.

Margaret wanted redemption.

Brenda wanted escape.

But none of them understood one thing.

The biggest battle had not started yet.

Because tomorrow, I would reveal the one secret even my husband never knew.

The secret that explained why my father trusted me with an empire.

And why the Escalante name had survived for generations.

The secret was not money.

May you like

It was power.

And Andrew was about to discover exactly who I had become.
