CHAPTER 3 THE SECRET BEHIND THE EMERALD NECKLACE

CHAPTER 3 THE SECRET BEHIND THE EMERALD NECKLACE
For four years, everyone believed the emerald necklace was just a piece of jewelry.
A priceless family treasure.
A symbol of the Cole family’s history.
A necklace that belonged to Margaret’s mother.
A necklace that represented tradition, status, and power.

But they never knew the truth.
The emerald necklace was never the thing they thought it was.
And now, that secret was about to come back.
I sat in my office at Escalante International, staring at the photographs spread across my desk.
The necklace.
Margaret.
Brenda.
The charity gala.
The night everything changed.
The night they decided to destroy me.
Victor stood across from me, holding another folder.
His expression was serious.
“Are you certain you want to reveal this now?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
A small pause followed.
“I wanted to reveal it four years ago.”
Victor understood.
Because he knew what I had sacrificed.
He knew how many times I stayed silent when I had every reason to fight back.
He knew how many insults I accepted.
How many lies I ignored.
How many times I protected people who would never protect me.
I picked up the old photograph.
In it, I was standing beside Andrew at our wedding.
I was smiling.
Truly smiling.
Back then, I believed I had married a man who loved me.
I believed his family would eventually accept me.
I believed patience could fix anything.
I was wrong.
Victor placed the folder closer.
“Brenda’s background is more complicated than we expected.”
I opened it.
The first page contained her financial records.
The second showed her communication history.
The third revealed something I never expected.
Brenda did not randomly appear in Andrew’s life.
She was searching for him.
She knew exactly who he was.
She knew exactly how wealthy he looked.
And more importantly—
She knew exactly how vulnerable he was.
“She planned this,” I whispered.
Victor nodded.
“From the beginning.”
I continued reading.
Brenda had studied Andrew’s habits.
His weaknesses.
His ego.
She knew he wanted admiration.
She knew he wanted someone who constantly praised him.
Someone who made him feel powerful.
Someone who never challenged him.
And she became that person.
The perfect illusion.
The perfect escape.
A woman who told Andrew everything he wanted to hear.
“You are smarter than everyone else.”
“You deserve more respect.”
“You should be running the entire world.”
“You are too talented to be controlled by anyone.”
Every word was designed to feed his pride.
And Andrew fell for it.
Completely.
I closed the folder.
“He never loved her.”
Victor looked surprised.
“What makes you say that?”
“Because Brenda does not love Andrew either.”
I looked at the documents again.
“She loves what she thinks Andrew owns.”
Victor nodded slowly.
“The money.”
“The mansion.”
“The reputation.”
“Exactly.”
For years, Brenda had looked at me like I was standing in her way.
But she never understood something.
She was not fighting a wife.
She was fighting the woman who controlled everything.
Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Andrew was losing control.
He stood in his office, throwing documents across the desk.
“This is impossible!”
Margaret sat in a chair, her face pale.
“I told you she was hiding something.”
Andrew looked at her.
“You knew?”
His mother looked away.
“I suspected.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You never told me?”
“Would you have listened?”
The question silenced him.
Because deep down, he knew the answer.
No.
He would not have listened.
For years, he believed Mariana was lucky to have him.
He believed she should be grateful.
He believed she had entered his world.
Not realizing the truth.
He had entered hers.
Brenda walked into the room.
She was still wearing expensive clothes.
Still carrying the confidence of someone who believed she had won.
“What is happening?”
Nobody answered.
Her smile slowly disappeared.
“Andrew?”
He looked at her.
For the first time, she saw uncertainty in his eyes.
“What did you know about Mariana?”
Brenda froze.
“What?”
“What did you know about her family?”
Her expression changed for half a second.
Only half a second.
But Andrew noticed.
And so did Margaret.
“You knew something.”
Brenda quickly recovered.
“Andrew, you’re upset.”
“Answer me.”
The room became silent.
Then Brenda laughed softly.
“You are seriously going to blame me because your wife hid things from you?”
Andrew stared at her.
“That’s not what I asked.”
She walked closer.
“Mariana always wanted to make herself look mysterious.”
“She wanted everyone to think she was special.”
Margaret watched carefully.
But something bothered her.
Because Brenda sounded too prepared.
Too calm.
Like someone who already knew this conversation would happen.
At that moment, Andrew’s phone received a message.
He opened it.
His face changed instantly.
“What?”
Margaret stood up.
“What happened?”
Andrew looked at the screen.
A news alert had appeared.
ESCALANTE FAMILY TRUST ACTIVATES CONTROL RIGHTS OVER COLE CORPORATION
Below it was a photo.
My photo.
Not as Andrew’s wife.
Not as a forgotten woman from a small background.
But as Mariana Escalante.
Heir to one of the largest private fortunes in the country.
The woman who had been standing beside him all these years.
The woman they mocked.
The woman they humiliated.
The woman they tried to destroy.
Andrew stared at the screen.
His hands began shaking.
“No…”
Margaret whispered.
“Oh my God.”
Brenda stepped closer.
Her face had lost all color.
Because now she understood.
The woman she wanted to replace…
Was the woman who owned everything.
Across the city, I watched the same announcement appear.
Victor looked at me.
“Your name is public now.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“Are you ready for the consequences?”
I looked at the city below.
For years, I hid behind Andrew’s shadow.
I allowed him to believe he was the hero of a story I had written.
But that story was over.
“They wanted the truth.”
I slowly stood.
“Now they get all of it.”
Victor asked quietly.
“And what happens next?”
I picked up my old brown leather purse.
The same purse they mocked.
The same purse that carried the documents proving my identity.
I smiled.
“Now they learn the difference between losing a wife…”
I walked toward the door.
“And losing an empire.”
The next morning would change everything.
Because the world was about to discover a secret Andrew had never known.
