CHAPTER 5 THE BOARDROOM WAR BEGINS

CHAPTER 5 THE BOARDROOM WAR BEGINS

The morning after my return to the Escalante headquarters felt different.

Not because the city had changed.

Not because the world knew my name.

But because, for the first time in years, I was no longer hiding behind someone else’s shadow.

I walked through the glass doors of the executive floor with confidence.

Not the confidence of someone seeking revenge.

The confidence of someone finally accepting who she truly was.

Every employee who passed by stopped and greeted me.

Some looked surprised.

Some looked nervous.

Some looked inspired.

But all of them looked at me differently.

They were no longer seeing Andrew Cole’s quiet wife.

They were seeing the woman who controlled the empire behind him.

Inside the boardroom, twelve executives were already waiting.

The atmosphere was tense.

Everyone knew this meeting would decide the future of Cole Corporation.

Victor stood beside me with several legal documents.

“Everyone is here.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

I entered the room.

The conversations immediately stopped.

I placed my old brown leather purse on the table.

Several executives glanced at it.

They had seen the pictures.

They knew the story.

The same purse that had been mocked for years was now a symbol of everything Andrew failed to understand.

Appearances meant nothing.

Power was hidden where people refused to look.

I took my seat.

“Thank you all for coming.”

Nobody spoke.

I opened the first folder.

“Today, we are not discussing Andrew Cole’s personal mistakes.”

A few executives exchanged uncomfortable looks.

“We are discussing the future of this company.”

One board member, Daniel Whitmore, cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Escalante, many people are concerned about recent events.”

“I understand.”

“Some believe this transition happened too suddenly.”

I looked at him.

“Sudden?”

He became quiet.

“Yes.”

I leaned forward.

“Mr. Whitmore, do you know how many times this company almost collapsed during Andrew’s leadership?”

Nobody answered.

“Three times.”

“How many times did investors lose confidence?”

“Five times.”

“How many times did I personally step in to prevent a public disaster?”

Silence.

“Twenty-seven times.”

The room became still.

Most of them knew the numbers.

They simply never knew who was responsible.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Are you saying Andrew received credit for your work?”

I looked at the documents.

“I am saying this company survived because people behind the scenes solved problems before the world noticed them.”

Victor placed another file on the table.

Inside were years of financial reports.

Contracts.

Investment records.

Emergency decisions.

Everything I had done quietly.

One executive slowly turned the pages.

His expression changed.

“I had no idea.”

“That was the point.”

I looked around the room.

“I did not need recognition.”

“I needed the company to survive.”

The door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Andrew walked in.

The confidence was gone.

But his pride remained.

He looked around the room.

Then at me.

“You really did this.”

Nobody moved.

I looked at him calmly.

“You mean the meeting?”

He laughed bitterly.

“No.”

“The takeover.”

His voice became louder.

“You planned this from the beginning.”

I studied him.

“No.”

Andrew stepped closer.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Because it is the truth.”

He looked around the room.

“You all know who built this company.”

Nobody answered.

That silence hurt him more than any words.

Because for the first time, people were not automatically agreeing with him.

Andrew looked at Daniel.

“You’re just going to let this happen?”

Daniel avoided his eyes.

“Mr. Cole…”

“What?”

The hesitation told Andrew everything.

He had lost their loyalty.

Not because they hated him.

Because they finally understood reality.

Andrew turned back to me.

“You are enjoying this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

That surprised him.

“I am not enjoying watching you lose everything.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“Because you need to understand that actions have consequences.”

His face hardened.

“You’re destroying my life.”

I answered quietly.

“No.”

“You destroyed the life we built.”

The room became silent.

Then Andrew noticed something on the screen behind me.

A presentation was already prepared.

The title appeared.

THE FUTURE OF COLE CORPORATION

His expression changed.

“What is that?”

I stood.

“That is the future.”

The presentation began.

New leadership structure.

New financial strategy.

New executive system.

A complete transformation.

Andrew stared at the screen.

“You’re replacing everyone?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I am replacing the people who protected your ego instead of protecting the company.”

The words hit hard.

Because they were true.

For years, Andrew surrounded himself with people who agreed with him.

People who praised him.

People who never challenged him.

And slowly, that destroyed him.

Suddenly, Victor received a message.

He checked his phone.

Then looked at me.

“Mrs. Escalante.”

“What happened?”

His expression became serious.

“Brenda has released a statement.”

The room changed instantly.

I looked at him.

“What kind of statement?”

Victor handed me the phone.

I read the headline.

ANDREW COLE’S MISTRESS CLAIMS SHE WAS MISLED ABOUT HIS FINANCIAL SITUATION

I smiled slightly.

“She moved quickly.”

Andrew looked confused.

“What did she say?”

Victor answered.

“She claims she had no knowledge of the ownership situation.”

Andrew’s face changed.

“What?”

I handed him the phone.

He read the statement.

His expression slowly turned from confusion into anger.

“She is blaming me.”

I nodded.

“Of course she is.”

Andrew looked at me.

“You knew this would happen.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

I closed the folder.

“Because people who love you stay when you lose everything.”

I paused.

“People who love what you own disappear when they realize it was never yours.”

Andrew stared at the phone.

For the first time, he understood.

Brenda had not chosen him.

She had chosen his empire.

And now that empire was gone.

She was already looking for a way out.

I gathered my documents.

“The meeting is over.”

Andrew looked at me.

“Where are you going?”

I picked up my purse.

“Somewhere you should have taken me years ago.”

He frowned.

“Where?”

I looked at him.

“To a place where people respect me.”

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, Andrew stood alone in the middle of the boardroom.

The same man who once controlled every conversation.

The same man who believed everyone needed him.

Now watching the woman he underestimated take control of everything.

But the battle was only beginning.

Because Brenda had just revealed her true colors.

May you like

And Andrew had no idea that the next person to betray him…

Would be the person he trusted most.
