Chapter 5: Margaret's Hidden Secrets

Chapter 5: Margaret's Hidden Secrets

Andrew sat frozen in the boardroom long after the directors had left for a private executive session.

The leather chair that had once made him feel untouchable now felt like a prison.

Outside the glass walls, executives hurried through the halls, whispering behind closed doors.

Nobody met his eyes.

Nobody offered reassurance.

For the first time since becoming CEO, Andrew was completely alone.

His phone vibrated.

Margaret Calling.

He answered immediately.

"Mother?"

Her voice shook with panic.

"Andrew... you have to come home."

"What happened?"

"There are lawyers here."

His stomach tightened.

"What lawyers?"

"They say they represent Escalante Residential Holdings."

Andrew was already on his feet.

"I'm on my way."

Twenty-five minutes later, his car screeched to a stop in front of the mansion.

Two black luxury sedans were parked outside the gates.

Several attorneys in dark suits stood on the front steps.

One of them calmly greeted him.

"Good morning, Mr. Whitmore."

"I'm James Carter, senior counsel for Escalante Residential Holdings."

Andrew didn't shake his hand.

"What do you want?"

The attorney handed him a sealed envelope.

"We're here to deliver formal legal notice."

Andrew tore it open.

The first line made his blood run cold.

NOTICE OF TERMINATION OF OCCUPANCY

His eyes widened.

"What is this?"

"The property owner has revoked your family's right to occupy this residence."

Margaret rushed out of the mansion.

"This is absurd!"

"My husband built this house!"

Attorney Carter remained perfectly calm.

"Mrs. Whitmore, according to county property records, the home has belonged to Escalante Residential Holdings for the past four years."

Margaret's face turned pale.

"That's impossible."

"It is a matter of public record."

He handed her another folder.

Inside were certified deeds.

Mortgage releases.

Ownership transfers.

County registrations.

Every document was legally recorded.

Every signature was genuine.

Andrew recognized his own name on several pages.

He remembered signing them.

He simply had never read them.

Margaret's hands trembled.

"No..."

"My husband would never..."

Attorney Carter interrupted politely.

"Your late husband refinanced this property before his passing."

"When Whitmore Capital encountered financial difficulties, the Escalante Family Trust purchased the outstanding obligations."

"The title transferred legally during the restructuring."

Andrew clenched his fists.

"Mariana planned this."

"No," Carter replied.

"Mrs. Escalante protected your family from foreclosure."

Silence.

Margaret looked confused.

"What foreclosure?"

The attorney opened another file.

"The Whitmore estate was nearly insolvent four years ago."

Andrew stared at him.

"What?"

Carter continued.

"Your father accumulated significant debt through unsuccessful commercial developments."

"He concealed the losses by refinancing multiple properties."

Margaret shook her head violently.

"You're lying."

The attorney slid several audited financial reports across the table.

Each one carried the signature of nationally recognized accounting firms.

Andrew flipped through them.

His father's handwritten notes filled the margins.

Loan extensions.

Emergency financing.

Requests for additional collateral.

His breathing became uneven.

"My father never told me."

"He told someone," Carter replied.

"He told Mariana."

Andrew slowly looked up.

"What?"

"Mrs. Escalante agreed to save the Whitmore family under one condition."

"Everything would remain confidential."

"So your father's reputation would stay intact."

Margaret staggered backward until she collapsed into a nearby chair.

The attorney spoke gently.

"Mrs. Escalante paid every outstanding debt."

"She settled the tax liens."

"She negotiated with your creditors."

"She personally guaranteed the restructuring."

Andrew whispered,

"Why?"

Carter answered without hesitation.

"Because she loved your family."

No one spoke.

The words echoed through the silent foyer.

Upstairs, Brenda quietly packed designer handbags into expensive suitcases.

She had overheard every word.

Her heartbeat raced.

If Mariana truly owned everything...

Then Andrew was no longer the wealthy man she had chosen.

She quickly opened her phone.

A message appeared from her personal banker.

Your request for a $250,000 transfer has been declined due to insufficient authorized funds.

Her face drained of color.

"What?"

She tried another account.

Declined.

Another.

Declined.

She rushed downstairs.

"Andrew!"

He barely looked at her.

"My cards don't work!"

"My accounts are frozen!"

Attorney Carter glanced toward her.

"Ms. Lawson?"

"Yes?"

"I'm afraid only immediate family members were granted temporary access while they arrange alternative housing."

Brenda frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you have no legal authority to remain on this property."

Her mouth fell open.

"You can't throw me out."

"I'm Andrew's fiancée."

The room became silent.

Andrew slowly turned toward her.

"My what?"

Brenda froze.

She hadn't meant to say it aloud.

Margaret stared at her in disbelief.

"Fiancée?"

Brenda stumbled over her words.

"I... I thought..."

Andrew's eyes narrowed.

"You thought what?"

"That once Mariana was gone..."

"You'd replace her?"

Brenda realized she had made a terrible mistake.

Before she could answer, another attorney approached Carter carrying a sealed envelope.

"This just arrived from corporate."

Carter opened it.

His eyebrows lifted slightly.

He looked directly at Andrew.

"There's another matter."

Andrew closed his eyes.

"What now?"

"The board of Whitmore Capital has voted."

His heart pounded.

Carter read slowly.

"Pending the investigation into corporate governance and allegations of domestic assault..."

"...you are suspended as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."

Andrew stood motionless.

He didn't argue.

He didn't shout.

He simply stared at the floor.

Everything was happening too fast.

His company.

His mansion.

His reputation.

His marriage.

All slipping away in less than twenty-four hours.

Across town, Mariana stood on the balcony of Escalante Global Headquarters, watching the morning sun rise over the city.

Alejandro joined her quietly.

"The board suspended him."

"I know."

"They're also beginning to uncover your father-in-law's debts."

Mariana nodded.

"They deserve the truth."

Alejandro studied his daughter's face.

"You still don't hate them."

She was silent for a long moment.

Finally, she answered softly.

"No."

"I hate what they chose to become."

Just then, her chief of security stepped onto the balcony.

"Mrs. Escalante."

She turned.

"We've completed the forensic audit."

"And we found something unexpected."

Mariana frowned.

"What is it?"

The security chief handed her a confidential folder.

"It isn't Andrew who stole millions from Whitmore Capital."

"It's someone much closer to him."

Mariana slowly opened the file.

The first photograph made her eyes narrow.

Across the top of the page, in bold letters, were the words:

CONFIDENTIAL FORENSIC REPORT

Beneath it...

One name appeared over and over again.

Margaret Whitmore.

The woman who had spent four years calling Mariana a thief...

Had been secretly stealing from her own family all along.
