Chapter 3: The Necklace's Secret

Chapter 3: The Necklace's Secret
Rain hammered against the mansion's tall windows.
The once-lively ballroom now felt cold and empty.
Crystal chandeliers still glittered overhead, but no one admired them anymore.
Andrew sat alone in his study, surrounded by stacks of contracts and financial reports.
His phone had not stopped ringing for nearly an hour.
Investors.

Banks.
Board members.
Lawyers.
Everyone wanted answers.
He had none.
A sharp knock interrupted his thoughts.
Before he could respond, Margaret stormed into the room.
Her face was pale with anger.
"This is all Mariana's doing!"
Andrew rubbed his temples.
"I know."
"No," Margaret snapped. "You don't."
"She's trying to destroy this family."
Brenda followed behind her, carrying two cups of coffee.
She handed one to Andrew and gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Baby, we'll figure this out."
"We always do."
Andrew accepted the cup without looking at her.
His mind was elsewhere.
He couldn't stop thinking about the documents bearing Mariana's last name.
Escalante.
How had he never questioned it?
Before he could speak, another call came in.
The caller ID read:
Chief of Security – Whitmore Estate
Andrew answered immediately.
"What now?"
The security chief sounded unusually nervous.
"Sir... we have a situation."
"What situation?"
"The police have arrived."
Andrew shot to his feet.
"The police?"
"There are three detectives outside."
"They have a warrant to review the reported theft of Mrs. Margaret Whitmore's emerald necklace."
Margaret froze.
"They're here already?"
Andrew frowned.
"I thought we hadn't filed the official report yet."
Margaret looked away for the briefest moment.
Brenda noticed.
"So... who called them?"
No one answered.
...
Ten minutes later...
The detectives entered the mansion.
Detective Sarah Collins, a veteran investigator known for handling high-profile financial crimes, calmly introduced herself.
"We're here regarding the reported theft."
Margaret immediately pointed toward the front door.
"The thief already left."
"My daughter-in-law stole my necklace."
Detective Collins opened her notebook.
"Did anyone witness her taking it?"
Margaret hesitated.
"Well..."
"No."
"But she was the only outsider here."
Collins nodded without reacting.
"Do you have surveillance cameras inside the house?"
Andrew answered.
"Yes."
"The entire first floor is covered."
The detective smiled politely.
"Excellent."
"Then we'll simply review the footage."
For the first time that night...
Brenda's smile disappeared.
...
The mansion's security office was silent except for the hum of computer monitors.
A technician loaded the recordings from earlier that evening.
Everyone watched.
Margaret folded her arms confidently.
Andrew stared at the screen.
Brenda stood perfectly still.
The footage began.
Guests arriving.
Champagne flowing.
Servers moving through the ballroom.
Then...
Margaret removed the emerald necklace before dinner.
She placed it inside the velvet jewelry box.
Exactly as everyone remembered.
The recording continued.
Mariana never went near it.
Instead, she spent nearly twenty minutes greeting investors and charity sponsors.
Detective Collins scribbled a note.
"So far, Mrs. Mariana Whitmore hasn't touched the necklace."
Margaret forced a smile.
"Keep watching."
The video continued.
Then something unexpected happened.
Brenda glanced around the ballroom.
Believing no one was watching...
She quietly picked up the jewelry box.
Andrew leaned closer to the screen.
Brenda opened it.
She looked over both shoulders.
Then slipped the emerald necklace into her designer handbag.
The room fell silent.
Every servant.
Every detective.
Every family member.
Everyone stared at the monitor in complete disbelief.
"No..."
Andrew whispered.
Brenda's face turned ghostly white.
"That's..."
"That's not what it looks like."
Detective Collins paused the video.
She zoomed in.
The image was unmistakable.
The emerald necklace disappeared into Brenda's purse.
Timestamp.
Clear.
High definition.
No doubt.
Margaret stumbled backward.
"Impossible..."
Brenda shook her head wildly.
"I was protecting it!"
"I didn't steal anything!"
"You have to believe me!"
Detective Collins calmly continued playing the recording.
Minutes later...
Brenda quietly carried her handbag upstairs.
Five minutes after that...
Margaret loudly announced the necklace was missing.
Then she accused Mariana.
Every second had been captured.
Every lie.
Every performance.
Every fake tear.
Andrew felt sick.
He slowly turned toward Brenda.
"You framed her."
Brenda reached for him desperately.
"Andrew, listen to me..."
"I only wanted your mother to finally see Mariana for who she really was."
"You lied."
"I was trying to protect us!"
"You let me hit my wife."
Tears streamed down Brenda's face.
"I never thought..."
Andrew cut her off.
"You stood there."
"You watched me slap her."
"You watched my mother humiliate her."
"And you said nothing."
Brenda's knees nearly gave out.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Detective Collins closed her notebook.
"I'm afraid there's more."
She nodded toward another officer.
The second detective produced the necklace.
"We found this exactly where the video suggested."
Inside Brenda's handbag.
The room became unbearably quiet.
Collins looked directly at Brenda.
"Ms. Brenda Lawson..."
"You are under investigation for filing a false theft accusation, fabricating evidence, and making statements that may have led to an assault."
Brenda burst into tears.
Margaret stared at the recovered necklace as though it were a ghost.
Andrew couldn't move.
His hands trembled.
For the first time...
He replayed the evening in his mind.
Mariana never shouted.
Never begged.
Never insulted anyone.
She simply told the truth.
And he had struck her.
Twice.
His phone vibrated again.
This time, it wasn't a banker.
It was the chairman of Whitmore Capital's board.
Andrew answered weakly.
"Hello..."
The chairman's voice was colder than he had ever heard.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"We've reviewed the emergency financial reports."
"And we've also received the security footage from your home."
Andrew's heart sank.
The chairman continued.
"The board will convene at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
"You are expected to explain both."
"The financial collapse..."
"And the assault on your wife."
The line went dead.
Andrew lowered the phone.
His breathing became shallow.
His company was falling apart.
His mistress had framed his wife.
His board had seen him commit assault.
And somewhere across the city...
The woman he had called worthless hadn't answered a single one of his forty-three missed calls.
For the first time since Mariana walked out of the mansion...
Andrew felt something he had never experienced before.
Fear.
Not of losing his money.
Not of losing his company.
May you like
But of realizing...
He had destroyed the only person who had ever been trying to save him.
