Chapter 13: The Man Who Came Back

Chapter 13: The Man Who Came Back
Darkness swallowed Escalante Global Headquarters for the second time.
The emergency lights flickered once...
Twice...
Then died completely.
For a split second, the seventy-story tower stood silent.
Then chaos erupted.
Employees screamed.
Security radios went dead.

Elevators stopped between floors.
Marcus Reed immediately drew a flashlight from his vest.
"Protect Mrs. Escalante!"
Four security officers formed a tight circle around Mariana and Alejandro.
Marcus spoke calmly despite the confusion.
"The EMP destroyed our internal network."
"What about the backup generators?" Alejandro asked.
"They're isolated."
"But they'll take several minutes to restart."
Several minutes.
It felt like an eternity.
Three floors below...
The three masked men moved through the emergency stairwell with military precision.
Night-vision goggles covered their eyes.
They never spoke.
Each movement was silent.
Disciplined.
Professional.
One of them checked a digital floor plan.
"Target is on the seventieth floor."
The tallest man nodded.
"No unnecessary casualties."
"We're here for one person."
Outside the building...
Police vehicles surrounded the block.
Detective Sarah Collins jumped from her SUV.
She looked up at the dark tower.
"Status!"
An officer ran toward her.
"Complete communications failure inside."
"What about the tactical team?"
"They're entering through the loading dock."
Collins grabbed her radio.
"No one fires unless absolutely necessary."
"Our priority is getting Mariana Escalante out alive."
Just then...
A black sports car screeched to a stop across the street.
Andrew Whitmore climbed out before the engine even stopped.
Collins spotted him immediately.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm here for Mariana."
"This is a federal operation."
"I know."
"You need to leave."
Andrew looked directly at the building.
"No."
Collins stepped in front of him.
"Mr. Whitmore, you're unarmed."
"You have no tactical training."
"You'll only get yourself killed."
Andrew met her eyes.
"Maybe."
"But if she's still in there..."
"I'm not walking away again."
Collins studied him for several long seconds.
The arrogant CEO she had met days earlier was gone.
Standing before her now was simply a man desperate to save the woman he loved.
She finally sighed.
"Stay behind my team."
"You don't make independent moves."
Andrew nodded once.
"I understand."
Inside the building...
Marcus led Mariana's group down the emergency stairwell.
"The roof is compromised."
"The elevators are dead."
"We're heading to the secure basement."
Suddenly...
A loud metallic crash echoed below.
Marcus froze.
"They're already inside."
Another crash.
Closer this time.
He turned to Mariana.
"There isn't enough time."
Alejandro frowned.
"What are you suggesting?"
Marcus pointed toward a maintenance corridor.
"It leads to an emergency exit two blocks away."
"I'll hold them here."
Mariana shook her head immediately.
"No."
Marcus smiled faintly.
"My job isn't to survive."
"It's to make sure you do."
Before anyone could argue...
The first gunshot echoed through the stairwell.
The attackers had arrived.
Marcus immediately pushed Mariana toward the maintenance corridor.
"GO!"
His security team formed a defensive line.
Mariana hesitated.
Marcus shouted again.
"NOW!"
She grabbed her father's arm.
They ran.
The narrow maintenance tunnel was barely wide enough for two people.
Dust filled the air.
Old pipes lined the ceiling.
Behind them...
Gunfire echoed through the building.
Alejandro looked back.
"We can't leave Marcus."
Mariana's eyes filled with tears.
"He made his choice."
Another explosion shook the walls.
Concrete dust rained from above.
They kept running.
Meanwhile...
Andrew entered the building alongside the tactical team.
Emergency lights had finally restored dim visibility.
Collins pointed toward the stairwell.
"Third team covers the basement."
"We're going up."
Andrew noticed blood on the floor.
One officer knelt.
"It's fresh."
Collins whispered,
"They're close."
On the sixty-sixth floor...
Marcus fired two controlled shots.
One attacker dropped behind cover.
The other two continued advancing.
Marcus knew they weren't ordinary criminals.
They moved like former special forces.
One attacker threw a smoke grenade.
The hallway disappeared beneath thick gray smoke.
Marcus coughed.
Visibility dropped to almost nothing.
Then...
A familiar voice echoed through the smoke.
"Marcus Reed."
Marcus recognized it instantly.
Victor Hale.
His voice came through a portable speaker carried by one of the attackers.
"I offered you a job years ago."
"You should have accepted."
Marcus smiled despite the danger.
"I'd rather die."
Victor laughed.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
The attackers opened fire again.
Elsewhere in the building...
Mariana and Alejandro finally reached the emergency exit.
Marcus's access card unlocked the heavy steel door.
Fresh air rushed inside.
They stepped into a deserted alley.
For the first time in several minutes...
They were outside.
Alejandro exhaled deeply.
"We made it."
Before Mariana could answer...
A black SUV rolled silently into the alley.
Its windows were tinted.
The rear door slowly opened.
A silver-haired woman stepped out.
Elegant.
Composed.
Wearing a charcoal-gray suit.
She smiled politely.
"Mrs. Escalante."
Mariana immediately moved in front of her father.
"Who are you?"
The woman gave a slight bow.
"My name is Eleanor Graves."
"I work for Mr. Victor Hale."
Alejandro stepped forward.
"We're not going anywhere with you."
Eleanor's smile never faded.
"Oh..."
"I wasn't asking."
She raised her hand.
Within seconds...
Half a dozen armed men emerged from nearby doorways.
Silencers glinted beneath the alley lights.
Mariana's pulse quickened.
They had escaped the building...
Only to walk into another trap.
Just then—
A black SUV crashed into Victor's vehicle at full speed.
The impact threw two gunmen to the ground.
Andrew jumped out before the vehicles had fully stopped.
He didn't hesitate.
He ran straight toward Mariana.
"GET DOWN!"
He tackled her to the pavement just as a suppressed gunshot shattered the alley's silence.
The bullet struck the brick wall exactly where Mariana had been standing a heartbeat earlier.
Andrew rolled to his feet, shielding her with his own body.
Eleanor Graves stared at him in surprise.
Then she smiled.
"So..."
"The husband finally remembered how to protect his wife."
Andrew never took his eyes off the gunmen.
His voice was steady.
"Not my wife."
"The woman I love."
Mariana looked up at him in stunned silence.
For the first time in years...
She saw the man she had fallen in love with.
Not the CEO.
Not the arrogant husband.
Just Andrew.
But before either of them could speak...
Another black limousine slowly pulled into the alley.
Every gunman immediately lowered their weapons.
Eleanor straightened her jacket.
Then respectfully bowed her head.
"The boss has arrived."
The limousine door opened.
A polished black cane appeared first.
Then expensive Italian shoes.
Finally...
Victor Hale himself stepped out.
He looked directly at Mariana.
Smiled.
And said the words she had dreaded for twenty years.
May you like
"Hello, little Mariana."
"It's been a very long time."
