Chapter 2: One Phone Call

Chapter 2: One Phone Call
Emily sat quietly inside a small coffee shop across town.
She placed one phone call.
"Hello, Mr. Reynolds," she said.
"It's time."
Within minutes, executives inside Carter Technologies began receiving emergency emails.
Board members demanded an immediate meeting.
Corporate bank accounts were temporarily frozen.
Property ownership records were reviewed.
Every document pointed to the same name.
Emily Carter.
Four years earlier, before meeting Ethan, Emily had inherited her late father's investment company, which quietly purchased controlling interests in several businesses—including the startup Ethan proudly believed he had built himself.
Emily had never corrected him.
She wanted to know whether he loved her or her wealth.
Now she had her answer.
Back at the mansion, Ethan's phone rang nonstop.
"What do you mean I can't authorize payments?"
"The board removed you as CEO."
"The title to the house..."
"It belongs to Mrs. Emily Carter."
"The cars?"
"Also registered under her holding company."
Ethan's face turned pale.
"No... That's impossible."
His lawyer frantically searched through public records.
Then he slowly lowered the folder.
"Mr. Carter..."
"You never actually owned any of it."

The room fell silent.
For the first time in his life, Ethan realized he had confused possession with ownership.
