Chapter 1: The Signature He Never Understood

The front door slammed so hard that the glass windows rattled.

"Get out," Ethan Carter barked, pointing toward the driveway. "This house isn't yours anymore."

Emily stood motionless, clutching a small overnight bag. Rain soaked her hair, but she refused to cry.

"We've been married for four years," she whispered. "You're really throwing me away like this?"

Ethan laughed.

"You were nothing before you met me, and you'll be nothing after today."

His attorney stepped forward with a stack of papers.

"Sign the divorce agreement."

Emily quietly flipped through each page.

Every paragraph stripped away something—her access to the house, the luxury cars, the joint bank accounts, even the furniture.

"You've listed everything," she said calmly.

"Of course," Ethan replied. "Because everything belongs to me."

Without another word, she signed.

Ethan smirked.

"I knew you'd finally understand your place."

Emily placed the pen on the table and picked up her bag.

"I understand more than you think."

As she reached the front gate, she paused and looked back.

"There was one thing you never bothered to ask me."

Ethan rolled his eyes.

"And what's that?"

She smiled faintly.

"Who actually owned everything before we got married."

Then she walked away into the rain.

For the first time that evening, Ethan felt a strange knot forming in his stomach.
