Chapter 6: The Secret Behind Project Legacy

Nathan stared at the message on his phone.

PROJECT LEGACY FILES RECOVERED.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

The investigation into his financial crimes had been expected. The frozen accounts, the board revolt, the federal inquiries—those were problems he believed he could eventually control.

But Project Legacy was different.

That file contained information Nathan had buried for years.

Information that could change everything.

He immediately called his attorney.

"Find out who accessed that file."

A nervous voice answered.

"We're already trying."

"Trying isn't good enough."

"Nathan, you need to understand something. The investigation has expanded. We have multiple agencies involved now."

Nathan tightened his grip on the phone.

"I don't care who's involved. Find out who has that file."

After the call ended, he walked through the empty mansion.

For the first time, the silence bothered him.

Every room reminded him of the confidence he once had.

The confidence that no one could challenge him.

The confidence that Evelyn would never fight back.

He had been wrong.

At Whitmore Global Holdings, Evelyn sat across from her father as they reviewed the recovered Project Legacy documents.

The first pages contained plans for corporate control.

The next pages revealed something far more personal.

Charles looked at his daughter carefully.

"There is something you need to know."

Evelyn noticed the hesitation in his voice.

"What is it?"

Charles opened a sealed envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

Evelyn recognized the Ashford family estate immediately.

But the people standing in front of it were not who she expected.

Her father placed another document beside the photo.

A legal agreement.

Signed decades earlier.

Evelyn read the first paragraph slowly.

Her expression changed.

"This can't be true."

Charles nodded.

"It is."

For years, Nathan had presented himself as the rightful heir to the Ashford empire.

But the documents revealed a hidden dispute over ownership that had never been made public.

The company Nathan controlled wasn't built only from his family's fortune.

A significant portion of it had originated from a partnership with the Whitmore family.

A partnership that Nathan's father had manipulated through hidden agreements.

Evelyn looked up.

"So Nathan knew?"

"Yes."

Charles sighed.

"He discovered these records years ago. Instead of correcting the past, he decided to erase it."

The realization hit her.

Nathan wasn't just hiding financial crimes.

He was protecting a stolen legacy.

Meanwhile, investigators searched through Nathan's private offices.

Behind a false panel in a bookshelf, they discovered a hidden storage device.

Inside were encrypted files, private contracts, and years of confidential communications.

The lead investigator studied the documents.

"This changes the entire case."

An agent beside him looked confused.

"How?"

"Because this proves intent."

The difference between a mistake and a crime was often one thing.

Planning.

And Nathan had planned everything.

That evening, Nathan met with his oldest friend, Marcus Vale, at a private club.

Marcus had known Nathan since college.

"You need to leave the country," Marcus said quietly.

Nathan stared at him.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

"I built this company."

"No," Marcus replied. "You built a version of the company everyone believed."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"You're turning against me too?"

Marcus looked disappointed.

"I'm trying to give you a chance to accept what you've done."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"You think they can destroy me?"

Marcus didn't answer.

That silence said everything.

Later that night, Evelyn returned home to a message waiting on her phone.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence:

You found Project Legacy. But you still don't know the whole truth.

She stared at the screen.

A second message appeared moments later.

Ask your father what happened the night your mother disappeared.

Evelyn froze.

Her mother had died when she was young.

At least, that was the story she had always been told.

She slowly turned toward Charles, who was standing across the room.

"Dad..."

He immediately knew.

"You received the message."

Evelyn's voice became quiet.

"What really happened to Mom?"

For the first time in years, Charles Whitmore looked afraid.

And Evelyn realized Nathan's biggest secret was not about money.

It was about the family history everyone had been protecting.
