Chapter 4: Cracks in the Empire

The elevator doors opened with a soft chime.

Nathan watched as four federal investigators stepped onto the executive floor, accompanied by the company's chief compliance officer. Their expressions were calm, professional, and impossible to read.

Every conversation in the hallway stopped.

Employees who had once rushed to greet the CEO quietly moved aside.

Nathan forced a confident smile.

"There must be some misunderstanding," he said as he approached the lead investigator. "I'm sure my legal team can clear this up."

The investigator handed him a folder.

"Mr. Ashford, we're here to preserve company records while an investigation is underway. We ask that you not remove, alter, or destroy any physical or electronic documents."

Nathan glanced at the first page.

It was a federal preservation order.

He knew ignoring it would only make matters worse.

"This is ridiculous," he muttered, handing the folder to his attorney.

Across the boardroom, Richard Coleman stood.

"Mr. Ashford, until this matter is resolved, the board has voted unanimously to place you on immediate administrative leave."

Nathan looked up sharply.

"You can't do that."

"We already have."

"The company belongs to me."

Richard calmly shook his head.

"You own shares, Nathan. The company belongs to its shareholders."

For the first time in nearly fifteen years, Nathan was asked to surrender his executive access card.

The room was silent as he slowly placed it on the polished table.

A security officer stepped forward.

"Sir, I'll escort you to collect your personal belongings."

Nathan stared at him in disbelief.

"You work for me."

The officer met his eyes.

"I work for Ashford Holdings."

Hundreds of miles away, Evelyn sat in a quiet conference room at Whitmore Global Holdings.

She watched the board meeting through a secure video feed provided by the company's legal advisers.

Charles Whitmore entered carrying another thick folder.

"We've identified three additional shell companies," he said.

Evelyn looked up.

"I thought there were eleven."

"There were."

Charles placed the folder in front of her.

"Now we've found fourteen."

Forensic accountant Daniel Brooks projected a flowchart onto the screen.

Lines connected dozens of corporations across several countries.

Money had moved through consulting firms, real estate partnerships, and charitable foundations before disappearing into private investment accounts.

"It wasn't random," Daniel explained.

"It was a carefully designed laundering system."

Evelyn studied the chart.

Nathan had always claimed he worked late because international business required constant attention.

Now she understood those late nights had been spent covering his tracks.

"Can we prove he controlled all of them?" she asked.

Daniel smiled.

"We already have."

He opened another folder.

Inside were signed corporate resolutions, email chains, passport records, and travel logs.

Every piece fit together.

Charles looked at his daughter.

"You didn't just expose one crime."

"You uncovered an entire network."

Meanwhile, Vanessa paced nervously inside Nathan's penthouse apartment.

The television repeated the same breaking news headline every few minutes.

Ashford Holdings CEO Placed on Leave Amid Financial Investigation.

She grabbed her phone and called Nathan.

He answered immediately.

"Where are you?" she asked.

"Leaving the office."

"They're saying your accounts are frozen."

"They're exaggerating."

"And the investigators?"

Nathan hesitated.

"They're asking questions."

Vanessa's confidence began to crack.

"You told me none of this could happen."

"It won't."

"But what if it does?"

Nathan didn't answer.

The silence frightened her more than any words could have.

She slowly looked around the luxurious apartment.

Everything she had dreamed of suddenly felt temporary.

That evening, Charles received a secure phone call.

After listening for several moments, he thanked the caller and ended the conversation.

Evelyn noticed the faint smile on his face.

"What happened?"

"The first witness just agreed to cooperate."

"One of Nathan's executives?"

Charles nodded.

"He says he has copies of documents Nathan never knew existed."

Evelyn leaned back in her chair.

For months, she had believed she was fighting alone.

Now the truth was spreading faster than Nathan could contain it.

One witness had stepped forward.

May you like

Others would almost certainly follow.

And somewhere inside the growing mountain of evidence, another secret was waiting to be uncovered—a secret capable of changing not only Nathan's future, but the history of the Ashford family itself.
