Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Vanessa had always believed she understood Nathan Ashford.

She knew his favorite restaurants, his business habits, his carefully rehearsed public image, and the way he could charm an entire room within minutes.

What she never understood was how easily Nathan could sacrifice anyone when protecting himself.

By the third day of the investigation, Vanessa stopped receiving his calls.

At first, she assumed he was busy.

Then she assumed he was angry.

Finally, she realized the truth.

Nathan was protecting himself.

Not her.

She stood inside the luxury apartment he had promised would become their new home after his divorce. The expensive furniture, designer clothing, and jewelry that once represented a dream now felt like evidence of a lie.

Her phone suddenly rang.

Nathan's name appeared on the screen.

She answered immediately.

"Where have you been?"

His voice was cold.

"Did anyone contact you?"

Vanessa frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Investigators. Lawyers. Anyone from the company."

The question bothered her.

"You mean you think I would talk?"

There was a pause.

A long one.

Then Nathan replied.

"I need to know what you remember."

Vanessa slowly sat down.

"What I remember?"

"About conversations. About documents. About anything you may have heard."

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she heard fear in his voice.

"You never asked if I was okay."

Nathan ignored the comment.

"Vanessa, listen carefully. If anyone asks questions, you say nothing."

The call ended.

She stared at the phone.

A strange realization settled over her.

Nathan wasn't trying to protect her.

He was trying to control her.

Meanwhile, Evelyn reviewed a new batch of evidence with her father's legal team.

The documents came from Daniel Pierce, Nathan's former chief financial officer.

For years, Daniel had been one of Nathan's most trusted employees.

Now he was ready to testify.

"He says Nathan forced him to approve several transactions," Charles explained.

Evelyn looked surprised.

"Why would he wait this long?"

Charles closed the folder.

"Because fear can keep people silent longer than money can."

Daniel joined the meeting through video conference.

His face looked exhausted.

"Evelyn, I owe you an apology."

She looked at him.

"For what?"

"I saw what Nathan was doing years ago. I knew some of the numbers didn't make sense."

He lowered his eyes.

"But I convinced myself it wasn't my problem."

Evelyn remained quiet.

Daniel continued.

"I was wrong."

He shared his screen.

A hidden archive appeared.

Thousands of emails.

Internal reports.

Private messages.

One file caught Evelyn's attention.

Project Legacy.

"What is that?" she asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"That's the part Nathan never wanted anyone to find."

Charles leaned closer.

"Open it."

Inside was a detailed plan created by Nathan years earlier.

It wasn't just about stealing money.

It was about gaining complete control over Ashford Holdings.

Nathan had planned to remove certain board members, manipulate company ownership, and create a situation where he would become nearly impossible to challenge.

But there was one section that confused everyone.

A list of names.

At the bottom was a name Evelyn recognized.

Her own.

That evening, Nathan returned to his estate expecting silence.

Instead, he found Vanessa waiting in the living room.

"We need to talk."

Nathan removed his coat.

"Not now."

"No. Now."

Something in her voice made him stop.

"You used me."

Nathan stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

"You told me everything was under control."

"It is."

"Your accounts are frozen. Your company is under investigation. People who worked for you are turning against you."

Nathan's expression hardened.

"Be careful, Vanessa."

She stepped closer.

"No. You be careful."

For the first time, she wasn't the woman trying to win him.

She was the woman realizing she had been another piece on his chessboard.

Nathan looked away.

"You don't understand what's happening."

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

"I understand perfectly."

She picked up her purse.

"You never loved me. You only needed someone who would believe your lies."

After she left, Nathan stood alone in the mansion.

The same mansion where he once believed he controlled everything.

Then his phone received a new message.

CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENT FOUND: PROJECT LEGACY FILES RECOVERED.

Nathan opened it.

His face immediately changed.

Someone had discovered the one secret he had spent years protecting.

A secret connected to Evelyn's family.

A secret that could destroy more than his company.

It could destroy his entire legacy.
