Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden in Plain Sight

Daniel stepped closer to the monitor, trying to keep the confidence that had carried him into the room.

"What exactly am I looking at?" he asked.

Dr. Anderson enlarged the image and pointed toward a measurement on the screen.

"This pregnancy is approximately eleven weeks along."

Daniel frowned.

"That's impossible."

"No," Dr. Anderson replied calmly. "It's actually very possible."

She opened Lauren's medical file.

"According to the records, Lauren's last menstrual cycle and every developmental marker match an eleven-week pregnancy."

Daniel looked confused.

"I had my vasectomy two months ago."

"Exactly."

The doctor folded her arms.

"Two months ago was roughly eight weeks. Your wife conceived this baby at least three weeks before your surgery."

Silence.

The words hung in the air like thunder.

Daniel blinked several times.

"No..."

Dr. Anderson continued.

"A vasectomy has absolutely nothing to do with a pregnancy that began before the procedure."

Lauren stared at her husband.

His face slowly lost all color.

Vanessa looked from Daniel to the doctor.

Then back again.

"So..." she whispered.

Lauren's voice was steady.

"The baby was conceived while we were still happily married."

Dr. Anderson nodded.

"Every medical fact supports that."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You told me she got pregnant after your surgery."

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

"You lied to me," Vanessa said.

"It wasn't like that."

"It was exactly like that."

Without another word, she grabbed her purse and walked out of the examination room.

The door slammed shut.
