Chapter 2 — The Truth Under Light
By sunrise, the apartment looked different.
Not calmer—sharper.
There were folders on the table, screenshots, medical reports, photos of Sofia’s injuries taken under harsh white light she could barely look at.
Elena sat beside her the entire time, never letting her sit alone with the silence.
Alexander had left early.
When he returned, his suit jacket was gone. His sleeves were rolled up. His expression was unreadable.
“They tried to contact us,” he said.
Sofia looked up instantly. “Who?”
“Javier’s legal team.”
Elena didn’t react. “And?”
Alexander placed his phone on the table.
A recorded message played.
A young man’s voice. Controlled. Carefully rehearsed.
“I had no involvement in what happened to Sofia. I was not in the room. I didn’t authorize anything. This is a misunderstanding between families.”
Sofia flinched at his voice.
Elena turned off the recording.
“Coward,” she said quietly.
Alexander didn’t argue.
Instead, he said something worse.
“He’s distancing himself. That means they know this can become criminal fast.”
Sofia swallowed. “So what happens to me now?”
Elena turned toward her fully.
“Now you stop protecting them.”
For the first time, Sofia didn’t argue.
Because something had changed in her eyes overnight.
