Chapter 2 — The Mask Breaks

Chapter 2 — The Mask Breaks
Santiago tried to recover his power the only way he knew how—anger.
He grabbed my arm.
Hard.
“Tell them to leave,” he hissed into my ear. “Now.”
I didn’t move.
For the first time in years, I didn’t obey him.
My father’s gaze dropped to Santiago’s hand on me.
Just like that, two security guards stepped forward.
Not violently.
Not rushed.
Professionally.
They didn’t touch Santiago yet.
They didn’t need to.
“Release her,” one of them said.
Santiago laughed. “Do you know who I am?”
My father answered instead.
“Yes,” he said. “A man who has been financially insolvent for six months.”
The words landed like a gunshot.
Beatriz’s glass slipped slightly in her hand.
My father continued.
“Your companies are surviving on liquidity injections routed through offshore accounts I control.”
Santiago’s face tightened.
“That’s impossible.”
My father tilted his head.
“No,” he said softly. “It’s documented.”
And for the first time, Santiago looked uncertain.
Not angry.

Not dominant.
Uncertain.
