CHAPTER 8 — THE SECRET MY FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

For a few seconds, I couldn’t process what Megan had just said.

“My father?”

The words came out as a whisper.

My father had been gone for five years.

A heart attack took him suddenly, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a house full of unfinished conversations.

He was the one person in my family who always seemed calm.

Fair.

Different from my mother.

At least, that was what I believed.

“Megan…” I said slowly. “My father was there that night?”

She nodded.

“I didn’t want to tell you because I knew how much you loved him.”

I sat down.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

“What happened?”

Megan looked toward the window.

“That night, after your mother left, I called him.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t know who else to call.”

The answer hurt.

Because I realized my pregnant wife had been so afraid that she reached out to my father before she could reach out to me.

“What did he do?”

“He came here.”

I listened carefully.

“He saw the bruises.”

My chest tightened.

“He knew?”

Megan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

A painful silence filled the room.

“Because he tried.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“He tried to tell you.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“The next morning.”

I remembered that morning.

I had gone to work early because my mother called me.

She said she needed to talk.

She told me Megan was becoming distant.

She told me I needed to be careful.

I had spent that morning listening to my mother.

Not my father.

Not my wife.

My father.

“What did he say?”

Megan wiped away a tear.

“He told you that something was wrong.”

I closed my eyes.

I remembered.

My father had called me.

I ignored it.

Then later, I called him back.

He sounded frustrated.

He said, “Jake, you need to open your eyes.”

I thought he meant Megan.

I thought he was worried about my marriage.

But now I understood.

He was warning me about my mother.

“What happened after that?” I asked.

Megan hesitated.

“Your mother found out he talked to you.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“And?”

“She was furious.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I heard them arguing.”

Megan’s voice became quieter.

“She came here that evening.”

My hands tightened.

“She blamed your father for choosing me over her.”

I stared at the floor.

My parents had always seemed like a strong couple.

But maybe I only saw what they wanted me to see.

“She told him he was destroying the family.”

“And what did he say?”

Megan looked at me.

“He said, ‘No, you’re destroying it yourself.’”

The room went silent.

Those words sounded exactly like something my father would say.

He had always been the person who told the truth, even when it was uncomfortable.

“What happened after that?”

Megan took a deep breath.

“That was the last time I saw him.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“The next morning, he came by before work.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to apologize.”

My eyebrows lowered.

“Apologize for what?”

“For not protecting me sooner.”

My heart broke.

“My father said that?”

Megan nodded.

“He said your mother had spent years making everyone believe she was the victim.”

I stood up and walked toward the window.

The world outside looked normal.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Neighbors living their lives.

But my entire understanding of my family had changed.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“And he still didn’t tell me everything?”

Megan looked down.

“He was afraid.”

“Of my mother?”

She nodded.

I felt anger.

But this time, it wasn’t directed at my father.

It was sadness.

Because I realized how many people had been afraid of one person.

My mother.

Later that night, I went through old boxes in the closet.

Things I hadn’t touched since my father died.

Old pictures.

Documents.

Letters.

Then I found something.

A small envelope with my name written on it.

My father’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

“Jake, if you are reading this, then I was never brave enough to tell you the truth myself.”

I sat down.

And I kept reading.

“Your mother loves you. But sometimes, love can become something dangerous when someone believes they own the person they love.”

I stopped.

My breathing became heavier.

The letter continued.

“I spent years trying to protect you from a truth you weren’t ready to accept.”

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“The day Megan was hurt was not the first time your mother crossed a line.”

I looked at Megan.

She was standing behind me.

“What does it say?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because I was reading the final lines.

“Jake, there is something about your mother that you need to know before you become a father.”

My hands trembled.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father had been trying to protect me.

Not from losing my mother.

But from becoming like her.

I turned the page.

But the rest of the letter was missing.

Someone had torn it away.

May you like

And I knew exactly who would have wanted those words hidden.

My mother.
