CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET MY WIFE WAS AFRAID TO REVEAL

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

Megan’s words stayed between us like a warning.

“She had help.”

I looked at my wife, trying to understand what she meant.

“Help from who?”

Megan looked toward the bedroom door my mother had just walked through.

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“I don’t know how deep it goes.”

That answer frightened me more than if she had given me a name.

Because it meant this wasn’t just one terrible decision.

It meant there could be more.

More lies.

More secrets.

More things happening behind my back while I thought I was protecting my family.

“Megan,” I said gently, “you need to tell me everything.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I wanted to.”

Her voice trembled.

“But every time I thought about telling you, I remembered how close you and your mother were.”

I swallowed.

“She’s my mother.”

“I know.”

Megan’s eyes filled with tears.

“That’s why I was scared.”

I sat quietly, letting her speak.

“She always knew exactly what to say to you. She knew how to make you doubt yourself. She knew how to make you feel guilty.”

I thought about every phone call.

Every conversation.

Every time my mother planted a small piece of suspicion in my mind.

And I hated how easily I had accepted it.

“When did this start?” I asked.

Megan took a deep breath.

“The week after we told her we were having a baby.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“She was happy at first.”

Megan gave a sad smile.

“She hugged me. She cried. She said she couldn’t wait to be a grandmother.”

I remembered that day.

My mother had been emotional.

She had said becoming a grandmother was the greatest gift she could receive.

“I thought she loved me,” Megan continued.

“She made me believe she did.”

“But then?”

“Then she started changing.”

Megan looked toward the window.

“She began making comments.”

“What kind of comments?”

“She said things like, ‘Pregnancy changes women.’”

“She told me I was taking too much of your attention.”

“She said you were becoming someone I controlled.”

My chest tightened.

Those were the same ideas she had been repeating to me.

“She wanted you to think I was the problem.”

Megan nodded.

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

Because it had worked.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough for me to question the woman who trusted me.

Enough for Megan to feel alone in her own home.

“There’s more,” Megan whispered.

I looked at her.

“What more?”

She hesitated.

Then she reached toward the nightstand and pulled out her phone.

“I saved something.”

My eyebrows lowered.

“What is that?”

“Messages.”

She unlocked the screen with shaking fingers and handed it to me.

The first thing I saw was a conversation between my mother and someone named “Linda.”

My eyes moved across the screen.

She’s making him too soft.

He used to listen to me.

The baby is the only reason he won’t leave her.

My stomach turned.

I kept scrolling.

Then I saw a message that made my blood run cold.

Don’t worry. After the scare, she’ll understand her place.

I stared at the words.

A “scare.”

Not an accident.

Not a mistake.

A plan.

I looked at Megan.

“Who is Linda?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Have you met her?”

“No.”

“Then how did you get these messages?”

Megan looked embarrassed.

“She accidentally sent one to me.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“When?”

“Three days after I got hurt.”

I looked at the bruises on her legs.

Three days after.

The timing was too perfect.

I stood up slowly.

“Why didn’t you show me this before?”

Megan’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because I saw what happened when I tried to tell you.”

I froze.

“What?”

“You defended her.”

The words hit me.

“You said I was misunderstanding your mother.”

I remembered.

I had.

I had told Megan that my mother was just worried.

That she meant well.

That she would never hurt anyone.

I had been wrong.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Megan shook her head.

“I don’t need an apology, Jake.”

She placed a hand on her stomach.

“I need to know that when our baby is born, I won’t have to be afraid in my own home.”

That sentence broke me.

Because she wasn’t asking for money.

She wasn’t asking for revenge.

She was asking for safety.

I took a deep breath.

“You won’t be afraid anymore.”

She looked at me.

“Promise?”

I held her hand.

“I promise.”

But deep inside, I knew one thing.

Finding the truth would not be easy.

Because my mother wasn’t going to admit what she did.

And whoever Linda was…

She was part of something much bigger.

The next morning, I made a decision.

May you like

I was going to find out who she was.

And I was going to uncover every lie that had been hiding inside my family.
