CHAPTER 7 — THE WARNING AT OUR DOOR

The moment Megan finished speaking, I felt like the air had disappeared from the room.
“Linda came here?”
Megan nodded slowly.
“After your mother left.”
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was scared.”
I immediately regretted asking the question that way.
Not because I didn’t need an answer.
But because I finally understood how many times my wife had been forced to make decisions while she was afraid.
She wasn’t hiding things because she didn’t trust me.
She was hiding them because she didn’t know if I would believe her.
“What exactly did she say?” I asked.
Megan looked down.
“She said my story would ruin your relationship with your mother.”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“She threatened you.”
“She didn’t say the word threat.”
“What did she say?”
Megan took a shaky breath.
“She said, ‘Think carefully about what happens if Jake loses his family because of you.’”
My hands curled into fists.
“She blamed you.”
Megan nodded.
“She made it sound like I was the one destroying everything.”
I walked away for a moment, trying to control my anger.
Because part of me wanted to drive straight to Linda’s house.
I wanted answers.
I wanted to know how someone could look my pregnant wife in the eyes while knowing what happened to her.
But another part of me knew I couldn’t act on emotion.
Not anymore.
That was how my mother had always won.
She created chaos.
She made people react.
She turned feelings into weapons.
I needed to be smarter.
I turned back to Megan.
“Did Linda touch you?”
Megan shook her head.
“No.”
“Did she hurt you?”
“No.”
“Did she say anything else?”
Megan hesitated.
That hesitation worried me.
“What?”
“She said something strange.”
“What?”
“She said your mother had been planning this for a long time.”
My stomach dropped.
“How long?”
“I don’t know.”
Megan looked frightened.
“But she said your mother had been waiting for the right moment.”
The words followed me all day.
Waiting for the right moment.
That meant this wasn’t a sudden decision.
It was planned.
That afternoon, I contacted a lawyer.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed protection.
My wife was pregnant.
My child was coming.
And I had spent too long believing that family meant ignoring warning signs.
The lawyer listened carefully as I explained everything.
The injuries.
The messages.
The threats.
When I finished, he leaned back in his chair.
“Jake, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Family situations like this are difficult because people convince themselves they are acting out of love.”
I nodded.
“That’s exactly what she says.”
He looked at me seriously.
“But love does not excuse intimidation. And it does not excuse violence.”
Those words stayed with me.
After leaving the office, I went home and found Megan sitting on the couch.
She looked exhausted.
I sat beside her.
“I talked to someone today.”
Her expression changed.
“Who?”
“A lawyer.”
She went quiet.
“Are you trying to leave me?”
My heart broke.
“No.”
I took her hand.
“I’m trying to protect you.”
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she whispered:
“I was afraid you would choose her.”
I shook my head.
“I almost did.”
The honesty hurt.
But I needed her to hear it.
“I almost believed the things she said.”
Tears filled Megan’s eyes.
“But you don’t anymore?”
I looked at my wife.
At the woman who had been carrying our baby while carrying fear.
“No.”
I squeezed her hand.
“I know the truth now.”
That night, something unexpected happened.
At around 10 p.m., someone knocked on our door.
Megan immediately froze.
Her hand went to her stomach.
I stood up.
“Stay here.”
I walked toward the door.
“Who is it?”
A woman’s voice answered.
“Jake, it’s me.”
My blood ran cold.
It was Linda.
I looked through the peephole.
She was standing outside holding a small gift bag.
Like she was visiting a friend.
Like nothing had happened.
I opened the door only halfway.
“What do you want?”
She smiled sadly.
“I think we need to talk.”
“No.”
Her smile faded.
“Jake, you don’t understand what’s happening.”
“I understand enough.”
She lowered her voice.
“Your mother made mistakes. But you don’t know the whole story.”
I stared at her.
“Then tell me.”
She looked past me, toward Megan.
Then she whispered:
“Ask your wife what she was doing the night your mother came over.”
My heart stopped.
Not again.
Another accusation.
Another attempt to create doubt.
Linda stepped back.
“You’re going to regret choosing sides before you know everything.”
Then she walked away.
I closed the door slowly.
Behind me, Megan was standing there.
She had heard everything.
“Jake…”
I turned around.
“Is there something else I need to know?”
Her face went pale.
And after a long silence, she whispered:
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
Megan looked down.
“The night your mother came here…”
She swallowed.
“I wasn’t alone.”
The room became silent.
“Who was with you?”
Megan looked at me.
May you like
And the answer changed everything.
“Your father.”
