Chapter 5 - The Woman Victor Almost Married.

Serena did not deny owning the iPad.
She denied knowing how it had been connected to Victor's account.
Victor listened without interrupting as she explained that his assistants often used her devices when they traveled.
Daniel quietly checked the claim.
No assistant had ever logged into Victor's executive portal from Serena's iPad before the secondary authentication change.
Serena changed her explanation.
She said Victor must have added it himself and forgotten.
Victor did not argue.
He simply asked Daniel to remove the device and lock every household and corporate credential connected to his name.
That frightened Serena more than his anger had.
"You're freezing me out?"
Victor stood at the bottom of the staircase.
"I'm securing my accounts."
"From your fiancée?"
"From anyone who has been using them without permission."
Serena's face flushed.
"You cannot accuse me of fraud because of a few invoices."
"I haven't accused you of fraud."
Victor paused.
"But you keep choosing the strongest possible word before I use it."
Serena stared at him.
Daniel looked down, concealing his reaction.
Victor continued.
"Go upstairs and pack a bag."
Serena blinked.
"What?"
"You are not staying here tonight."
"Victor."
"You struck Lily while she was holding my son."
"She was keeping him from me."
"You used something on Oliver without my permission."
"Two drops."
"You created or possessed documents with my signature that I did not sign."
"They were drafts."
"And your brother's company received money from my household accounts."
Serena's voice cracked with fury.
"So that's it?"
Victor looked at her.
"For tonight, yes."
"You are throwing away our marriage over the nanny."
Lily flinched at the word nanny as if it had become an accusation.
Victor did not.
"I am postponing a wedding because I walked in on something no father should ignore."
Serena laughed bitterly.
"Postponing?"
Victor's eyes held hers.
"Do not make me choose a different word yet."
She stared at him for a long moment.
Then she turned and walked upstairs.
Her heels struck each step with controlled precision.
The moment she disappeared, Victor's shoulders dropped.
Lily looked away.
She had never seen him tired like that.
In photographs, Victor Blackwood always seemed made of polished stone.
He ran hotels, office towers, and a private investment group worth more than most people could imagine.
But none of that mattered in a living room where his child had been frightened under his own roof.
Victor turned to Lily.
"I owe you an apology."
She shook her head.
"You didn't do this."
"I brought her into this house."
"You couldn't know."
"I should have."
Lily looked toward Oliver.
"People can be careful about what they show."
Victor heard something in her tone.
"How long has she been different when I'm gone?"
Lily's silence answered first.
"Lily."
"At first, she wasn't."
"When did it change?"
"After the engagement."
Victor leaned against the table.
The engagement had happened four months earlier at his hotel in Napa Valley.
Serena had cried when he proposed.
She had held Oliver for the photographs.
Oliver had squirmed toward Lily, who stood outside the frame.
Victor remembered laughing about it.
Serena had smiled too.
Now he wondered whether she had been smiling at all.
"What did she do?"
Lily chose her words carefully.
"She started changing Oliver's routines."
"How?"
"She moved his nap times even when he was exhausted."
"Why?"
"She said his schedule needed to fit hers."
Victor closed his eyes briefly.
Lily continued.
"She told me not to pick him up immediately when he cried."
"Did you follow that?"
"No."
Victor almost smiled despite everything.
"I know."
Lily looked embarrassed.
"Then she started asking me questions about your travel schedule."
Victor's attention sharpened.
"What questions?"
"How long you'd be gone."
"That's not unusual."
"She wanted exact return times."
Daniel looked up from his laptop.
"Exact?"
Lily nodded.
"She asked whether your driver ever changed routes."
Victor looked at Daniel.
Daniel's expression had become more serious.
"Did she say why?"
"She said she wanted to plan dinners."
Victor thought of how often Serena had known when his plane landed before he had texted her.
He had assumed an assistant told her.
Daniel asked, "Anything else?"
Lily hesitated.
"She asked where Mr. Blackwood keeps copies of his personal documents."
Victor felt a new wave of cold unease.
"Which documents?"
"Oliver's birth certificate."
"Why?"
"She said the wedding planner needed it for travel paperwork."
Victor looked at Daniel.
"The wedding planner has never asked me for Oliver's birth certificate."
Daniel wrote something down.
Lily continued.
"She also asked about his trust."
Victor's head lifted.
"What did she ask?"
"Who controls it if something happens to you."
The room became completely still.
Victor spoke slowly.
"What did you tell her?"
"Nothing."
"Why not?"
"Because I don't know."
That was true.
Lily had never been included in financial discussions.
Daniel closed the laptop.
"Sir, that changes the risk profile."
Victor nodded.
He felt suddenly grateful that someone else could say the practical words his mind was too angry to form.
Hannah stood beside the crib.
"Oliver needs sleep."
Victor looked at his son.
"He stays with me tonight."
Lily nodded.
"Of course."
Victor looked at her bruised face.
"You should go home."
She immediately looked toward Oliver.
Victor understood.
"Or stay in the guest room."
Relief crossed her face before she could hide it.
"Thank you."
"You don't have to work."
"I'm not asking to work."
She looked at Oliver.
"I just don't want him waking up to strangers tonight."
Victor nodded.
Before Serena returned downstairs, Daniel asked Victor to step into the study.
He had completed a quick review of the family's staff-access records.
"There are three recent changes you should know about."
Victor leaned against the desk.
"Go ahead."
"Lily's gate credential was scheduled to deactivate Friday at midnight."
Victor frowned.
"The wedding was three weeks away."
"I know."
"Who scheduled it?"
"A household administrator account."
"Mine?"
"No."
Daniel turned the screen.
The request had been entered under Serena's new household profile.
Victor stared at the date.
It had been scheduled two weeks earlier.
"She planned to remove Lily before today."
"Looks that way."
Daniel opened the next record.
"Marta's access was going to be reduced after the wedding."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"Reduced how?"
"No overnight access to the family floor unless requested."
"Marta has had unrestricted household access for fourteen years."
"I know."
The third change involved Grace.
Her permanent guest profile had been removed from automatic gate approval.
Victor looked at Daniel.
"Serena was isolating the house."
Daniel did not use the word, but he did not disagree.
"She was changing who could reach the family floor without her approval."
Victor sat down.
He thought about how easy each change could have been explained separately.
A nanny leaving before a wedding.
An older housekeeper receiving a more limited schedule.
A sister being asked to call before visiting.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing that would have caused Victor to cancel a meeting.
But together they created a house where Serena stood between Oliver and nearly every adult who had known him before her.
Victor looked at Daniel.
"Reverse all of it."
"Already did."
Victor nodded.
"And from now on, no household access change involving Oliver's caregivers happens without two approvals."
"Understood."
Victor was beginning to see that Serena's strongest weapon had never been volume.
It had been normal-looking paperwork.
Upstairs, a drawer slammed.
Then another.
Serena came down twenty minutes later carrying a cream suitcase.
She had changed into a black coat and pulled her blonde hair into a low knot.
Her face was calm again.
Too calm.
Victor watched her place the suitcase near the door.
"Where will you go?"
"A hotel."
"Daniel will arrange security transportation."
"I don't need your security."
"Tonight you do."
Serena looked at Lily.
The hatred in her eyes was brief but unmistakable.
"You got what you wanted."
Lily stood.
"I never wanted any of this."
"You wanted him to choose you."
Victor stepped forward.
"Enough."
Serena turned to him.
"You think she's innocent because she protects a baby for a paycheck?"
Victor said nothing.
Serena smiled without warmth.
"Ask her why she really took this job."
Lily's face went white.
Victor saw it.
Serena noticed that he saw it.
"There it is," Serena whispered.
Victor looked at Lily.
"What is she talking about?"
Lily could not answer.
Serena picked up her suitcase.
"You should know who you are trusting before you destroy your life for her."
Victor moved closer.
"Serena."
She opened the door.
"Ask Lily what happened to her sister."
The door closed behind her.
Victor turned slowly toward Lily.
Lily stared at the floor.
Her hands were shaking again.
And suddenly Victor understood that Serena had not used a random threat.
May you like
She knew something Lily had never told him.
