Chapter 4 - The Brass Key.

Victor stared at the key in Lily's palm.

It was old-fashioned, no longer than his little finger, with a narrow oval head and a shallow scratch across one side.

"What does it open?"

Lily looked toward the staircase.

"The bottom drawer of the nursery armoire."

Victor frowned.

"That drawer doesn't lock."

"It didn't before."

Serena stepped away from the fireplace.

"This has gone far enough."

Victor ignored her.

"When did you notice the lock?"

"Last week."

Lily kept her eyes on the key.

"I was putting away Oliver's winter blankets, and the bottom drawer wouldn't open."

"Why would that matter?"

"Because that's where we kept the extra crib sheets."

Serena laughed with visible contempt.

"So now a locked linen drawer is evidence of a conspiracy?"

Daniel closed his laptop halfway.

"Miss Vale, nobody used that word."

Serena turned on him.

"You work for Victor, not me."

Daniel's expression did not change.

"Correct."

Victor held out his hand.

Lily placed the key in it.

"Where did you get this?"

"Under the changing table."

"Today?"

"Yesterday morning."

Serena's face tightened again.

Lily continued.

"I thought Marta had dropped it."

Marta called from the kitchen doorway.

"It isn't mine."

Victor looked back at Lily.

"So you tried it in the drawer."

She nodded.

"I shouldn't have."

"What did you find?"

Lily hesitated.

"A black folder."

Victor glanced toward Serena.

She had stopped moving entirely.

"What was inside?"

"Documents with your name on them."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"What documents?"

"A caregiver authorization."

Lily took a breath.

"A notice saying I was being terminated."

Serena interrupted.

"Draft paperwork."

Victor turned.

"You knew it was there."

Serena immediately realized her mistake.

"Because I put it there."

Victor's voice hardened.

"Why?"

"Because I am trying to prepare this household for after we're married."

"By hiding documents in my son's nursery?"

"They weren't hidden."

Lily quietly said, "The drawer was locked."

Serena glared at her.

Victor stepped between them again.

"What else was in the folder?"

Lily reached into her pocket and removed her phone.

"I took pictures."

Serena moved so quickly that Daniel stepped forward.

"Give me that phone."

Lily backed away.

Victor's voice cut across the room.

"Serena."

She stopped.

Lily unlocked the phone with shaking fingers.

The first photograph showed a single-page document titled TEMPORARY HOUSEHOLD CAREGIVER AUTHORIZATION.

Victor's name appeared at the bottom.

His signature appeared beneath it.

He stared at the image.

"I never signed this."

Serena spoke immediately.

"You sign hundreds of documents."

"I know my signature."

Daniel leaned over Victor's shoulder.

"The date is three weeks ago."

Victor remembered that date.

He had been in Boston negotiating a hotel acquisition.

The document authorized Serena Vale to make staffing decisions related to Oliver's household care.

It also authorized her to communicate with medical offices and childcare agencies on Victor's behalf.

Victor read the language twice.

"Where did this come from?"

Serena shook her head.

"Ask your lawyers."

Lily swiped to the second photo.

It was a termination letter addressed to her.

The letter accused Lily of failing to follow sleep protocols, creating unhealthy emotional dependence, and interfering with family bonding.

Victor's face darkened with every line.

At the bottom was another copy of his signature.

Lily spoke quietly.

"She told me this morning that you had already decided to fire me."

Victor looked up.

"She told you I signed this?"

"Yes."

Serena said, "I was trying to avoid an ugly scene."

Lily touched her cheek.

"It became ugly anyway."

Victor's gaze returned to the phone.

The third photograph showed a stack of invoices from a company called BrightPath Family Development.

Each invoice listed consulting services for Oliver.

Behavioral transition planning.

Sleep routine management.

Attachment restructuring.

Victor frowned.

"I've never heard of this company."

Daniel asked, "Amounts?"

Lily zoomed in.

The invoices ranged from nine thousand to eighteen thousand dollars.

The total over six weeks was more than seventy-four thousand.

Victor's expression changed from anger to confusion.

"Who paid these?"

Serena said nothing.

Daniel opened his laptop again.

"I can check the household accounts."

Victor nodded.

Daniel typed for less than a minute before stopping.

"They were paid."

Victor stared at him.

"By whom?"

"Blackwood Family Services LLC."

"Who approved them?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Your office account."

Victor's voice became flat.

"I didn't approve them."

Serena folded her arms.

"Then somebody in your office did."

Daniel clicked deeper into the transaction history.

"The approvals originated from your executive portal."

Victor looked toward Serena.

"The same portal used to change the camera permissions?"

"Different system," Daniel said.

"Same username format."

Victor felt the pieces begin to form a pattern he did not yet understand.

Someone had not simply lost control during an argument.

Someone had been building a paper trail.

A paper trail that made Lily look unstable.

A paper trail that made Serena look authorized.

And a paper trail that used Victor's name.

Lily swiped to the next photo.

A handwritten note was clipped to one invoice.

Victor recognized Serena's handwriting.

PHASE TWO AFTER NANNY EXIT.

Underneath were three initials.

G.V.

Victor looked at Serena.

"Who is G.V.?"

"I have no idea."

Daniel's eyes lifted from the laptop.

"Grant Vale?"

Serena's face changed.

Victor knew the name.

Grant Vale was Serena's older brother.

He lived in Connecticut and had been introduced as a private investment consultant.

Victor had met him twice.

"Does Grant own BrightPath?"

Serena shook her head.

"No."

Daniel was already searching the state's business registry through his corporate database.

He stopped after a few seconds.

"BrightPath Family Development is registered to Vale Advisory Holdings."

Victor felt a cold pressure behind his ribs.

"Who owns Vale Advisory Holdings?"

Daniel did not look at Serena when he answered.

"Grant Vale."

Serena's voice rose.

"That proves nothing."

Victor stared at her.

"My household paid your brother seventy-four thousand dollars for services I never approved."

"He did legitimate work."

"For my fourteen-month-old son?"

"For the transition into a blended family."

Hannah frowned.

"What does 'attachment restructuring' mean?"

Serena looked away.

Lily knew.

Victor saw it in her expression.

"Lily?"

She held the phone against her chest.

"Serena told me Oliver was too attached to me."

"When?"

"What exactly did she say?"

Lily hesitated.

"She said after the wedding, people would expect Oliver to reach for her in photographs."

Victor stared at Serena.

Lily continued.

"She said it would look strange if he kept reaching for the nanny."

Serena's voice became defensive.

"I was talking about family bonding."

"No," Lily said.

Her voice was still soft, but it no longer shook.

"You told me to stop comforting him when he cried for me."

Serena stepped forward.

"Because you encourage it."

"I comfort him because he's a baby."

"You're making him dependent on you."

Victor's face went hard.

"He is fourteen months old."

Serena looked at him desperately.

"And I am supposed to become his mother."

Victor's answer came without hesitation.

"Not by making him afraid."

The words landed between them.

Serena's eyes filled with anger rather than tears.

"You think she loves him more than I do?"

Victor looked at Lily's bruised cheek.

He looked at Oliver asleep in the portable crib.

Then he looked at the documents bearing a signature he never wrote.

"Right now, I think I don't know you at all."

Daniel's laptop chimed again.

He read a newly recovered system log.

"Sir."

Victor turned.

"What?"

"The executive account that approved the BrightPath invoices used two-factor authentication."

Victor frowned.

"My phone never received those codes."

"They weren't sent to your phone."

Daniel looked directly at Serena.

"Three weeks ago, a secondary authentication device was added to your account."

Victor felt the room narrow around him.

"What device?"

Daniel read the identifier.

May you like

"An iPad registered to Serena Vale."
