Chapter 3 - The Bottle in the Laundry Room.

Marta kept the amber bottle inside a clean glass jar in the locked laundry cabinet.

She brought it upstairs twenty minutes later with both hands wrapped around the container.

Victor placed Oliver in a portable crib beside the sofa while Hannah examined the bottle without opening it.

The label had been partly peeled away.

Only three words remained visible.

NIGHTTIME BOTANICAL BLEND.

Hannah photographed the bottle.

"Do not give him anything from this again."

Victor looked at Serena.

"Where did it come from?"

Serena stood near the fireplace with her arms folded.

"A wellness store."

"Which one?"

"I don't remember."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"You bought something to give my son and don't remember where you bought it?"

"I ordered it online months ago."

"Show me the order."

Serena's face hardened.

"You don't get to search my private purchases because your nanny is dramatic."

Victor stared at her for several seconds.

"You are standing in my home after I watched you raise your hand over the woman holding my child."

He pointed to the bottle.

"Privacy is not the issue I am thinking about right now."

Serena looked toward the front door.

Daniel Hale entered before she could answer.

He was tall, gray at the temples, and still wearing the dark suit he used for corporate security meetings.

He carried a laptop under one arm.

"Sir."

Victor motioned him toward the dining table.

"Show me what you have."

Daniel opened the laptop.

A map of the home's security network appeared.

"The cameras never stopped recording."

Lily exhaled for what seemed like the first time in minutes.

Serena did not move.

Daniel continued.

"Someone only disabled the household interface."

Victor asked, "Can we watch the recordings?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Most of them."

"Most?"

"The clips between 1:58 and 2:26 today were deleted from the server."

Serena laughed in disbelief.

"Then there is nothing to see."

Daniel looked at her.

"I didn't say they were unrecoverable."

Her smile disappeared.

Victor caught the change.

"Recover them."

"I'm already working on it."

Daniel clicked another folder.

"But yesterday's nursery footage is intact."

Lily's face went pale.

Serena stepped forward.

"You cannot seriously be planning to play private nursery footage in front of the staff."

Victor looked toward Marta.

"Marta, thank you."

She understood immediately.

"I'll be in the kitchen."

Hannah started to follow.

Victor stopped her.

"Please stay."

Hannah nodded.

Daniel opened the recording from the previous afternoon.

The screen showed Oliver asleep in his crib.

Lily adjusted the blanket, checked the monitor, and left the nursery.

Two minutes later, Serena entered.

She wore the same ivory blouse she had worn at breakfast.

She stood over the crib without touching Oliver.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then she looked directly toward the camera.

Her gaze remained fixed on it.

Victor leaned closer to the screen.

Serena crossed to the wall tablet.

The nursery camera feed went black on the household system, but Daniel's server recording continued from its hidden backup stream.

Serena turned back toward the crib.

She lifted Oliver.

He woke and began to fuss.

Serena bounced him impatiently.

"Stop."

The word came through the nursery microphone.

Victor's face tightened.

Serena glanced at him.

"People say things when they're tired."

Nobody answered.

On the recording, Oliver cried louder.

Serena put him on the changing table.

She opened her handbag.

She removed the small amber bottle.

Lily made a sound under her breath.

Victor did not look away from the screen.

Serena squeezed something into a bottle of water.

Hannah leaned forward.

"How much?"

The camera angle made it impossible to tell.

Serena held the bottle near Oliver.

He turned his head away.

She tried again.

The nursery doorknob moved.

Serena looked toward it.

Lily's voice came faintly through the door.

"Serena?"

On screen, Serena pushed the amber bottle into her handbag.

She unlocked the door.

Lily entered immediately and lifted Oliver.

The rest matched Lily's account almost exactly.

Lily looked at the water bottle.

Serena took it from the changing table.

"I know how to care for a child."

The recording ended when both women left the room.

Victor closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked older.

"Why?"

Serena's face was rigid.

"Because he needed sleep."

"He was sleeping."

"He woke up."

"Because you picked him up."

"I was trying to bond with him."

Victor stared at her.

"By giving him something without medical approval?"

"I made one mistake."

Lily looked at the bottle in the jar.

"It wasn't one mistake."

Serena turned on her.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

Lily stood.

Her voice trembled, but she kept speaking.

"I found that bottle before yesterday."

Victor turned toward her.

"When?"

"Two weeks ago."

Serena's face changed.

Victor saw it.

"Where?"

Lily answered slowly.

"In Oliver's diaper bag."

Victor's stomach dropped.

"Why didn't you tell me then?"

"Because Serena said it belonged to her."

"It did," Serena snapped.

Lily continued.

"Then I found it beside Oliver's bottle warmer three days later."

Hannah asked, "Was Oliver unusually sleepy on either day?"

Lily went silent.

Victor looked at her.

"Lily."

She nodded.

"Twice."

The word seemed to hollow out the room.

"He slept almost four hours in the afternoon."

Victor gripped the back of a chair.

"Why didn't anyone call me?"

"I called the pediatric office."

Hannah looked startled.

"I don't remember that call."

"I spoke to the answering service."

"What did they tell you?"

"They told me Serena had already called and said Oliver had been awake all night."

Serena said, "He had been."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

Victor looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"Because I was here."

Serena's eyes flashed.

"Not every second."

Lily faced her.

"I sleep in the room across from his nursery when Victor travels."

Victor's voice became very quiet.

"I was in Chicago that night."

Lily nodded.

"Oliver slept from eight forty until five fifteen."

Hannah frowned.

"Then the information given to the answering service was false."

Serena threw up her hands.

"This is becoming a trial."

Daniel's laptop chimed.

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel read the alert.

"The deleted footage from today is partially restored."

Victor stepped beside him.

"Play it."

Daniel opened the first recovered clip.

The picture flickered.

The living room appeared.

The time stamp read 2:03 p.m.

Lily carried Oliver into frame.

Serena followed.

There was no sound for the first several seconds.

Then the audio returned.

Serena's voice was clear.

"I told you to pack your things."

Lily stopped moving.

Victor looked at her.

"She told you to leave?"

Lily did not answer because the recording continued.

On screen, Lily said, "Victor did not fire me."

Serena stepped closer.

"He doesn't have to know yet."

Victor's face went still.

Serena reached into a folder and held out an envelope.

"Take the money and disappear before dinner."

The clip froze.

Victor asked Daniel to back up ten seconds.

The envelope remained visible in Serena's hand.

Lily stood several feet away, holding Oliver with one arm while refusing to take it.

Daniel paused on the image.

"Can we identify the bills?"

"Not from this resolution," Victor said.

Lily answered quietly.

"They were hundreds."

Serena turned toward her.

"You counted them?"

"You told me the amount."

Serena stopped.

Lily looked at Victor.

"She said twenty thousand would cover several months of rent and give me time to find another family."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Did she say where the money came from?"

"No."

Daniel checked the household withdrawal records.

There was no twenty-thousand-dollar cash withdrawal from Victor's accounts that week.

"Then it may have come from her personal account," Evelyn would later tell them.

But at that moment the missing source created another question.

Victor asked Serena directly.

"Where did you get the cash?"

"My money."

"From which account?"

"That is none of your business."

Victor almost answered that offering money to remove his son's caregiver had made it his business.

Instead, he looked at Daniel.

"Preserve the image and timestamp."

Daniel nodded.

Victor turned back to Lily.

"Why didn't you take it?"

Lily looked offended by the question until she saw his expression.

He was not accusing her.

He truly wanted to know.

"Because if you wanted me gone, you could tell me yourself."

She shifted Oliver higher.

"And if you didn't want me gone, then taking Serena's money would have helped her make a lie true."

Victor remembered that sentence later.

A lie did not always need to be believed immediately.

Sometimes it only needed somebody else to behave as if it were true.

The clip froze.

Daniel tried to restart it.

The file was corrupted after that point.

Victor looked from the screen to Serena.

"What money?"

Serena said nothing.

Lily's hands began to shake.

Victor turned to her.

"What was in the envelope?"

Lily swallowed.

"Twenty thousand dollars."

Serena closed her eyes.

Victor asked, "Why would she pay you twenty thousand dollars to leave my house?"

Lily looked toward Oliver.

Then she reached into the pocket of her uniform.

She pulled out a small brass key.

May you like

"Because I found something in the nursery that she did not want you to see."
