Chapter 3: A Race Against Time

Chapter 3: A Race Against Time

I called the police.

Victoria tried to snatch my phone.

When that failed, she grabbed her purse and stormed toward the front door.

Two officers arrived less than twenty minutes later.

Emily gave her statement.

The recording was copied as evidence.

Victoria was escorted from the house while shouting that everyone would regret believing "the help."

As the police car disappeared, Emily collapsed onto the living room sofa.

"My son..."

She checked her phone.

There were twelve missed calls from the hospital.

Without another word, I picked up my keys.

"We're going."

Emily looked stunned.

"You don't have to."

"Yes," I said.

"I do."

We drove across the city in silence.

When we arrived, doctors were preparing Emily's six-year-old son, Noah, for emergency surgery.

She broke down beside his bed.

The surgeon explained that Noah desperately needed a specialized procedure that insurance refused to cover.

Without thinking twice, I signed the authorization forms myself.

The operation began within the hour.

For the first time that day, Emily allowed herself to hope.
