Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Door

Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Door
The sound of Victoria's heels grew louder with every step.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Emily's face turned ghostly pale.
"Please..." she whispered. "Don't let her know I told you."
Before I could answer, the nursery door swung open.
Victoria stood there in a designer dress, a smile frozen on her face the moment she saw me untying Emily.
For a split second, neither of us spoke.
Then she laughed.
"Oh, darling. You're home early."
I slowly stood, staring at the red marks on Emily's wrists.
"What happened here?"
Victoria didn't even glance at Emily.
"She became hysterical," she replied casually. "She threatened to run off with the twins because I wouldn't give her an advance on her salary. I had no choice but to restrain her until you came home."
Emily burst into tears.
"That's not true!"
Victoria's eyes flashed toward her.
"Be quiet."
I looked from one woman to the other.
Emily's lip was split.
Her wrists were bleeding.
The babies were calm in her arms despite everything.
Nothing about Victoria's story made sense.
Then Emily quietly reached into her pocket.
With trembling fingers, she handed me her phone.
"I... I started recording after she hit me."
I pressed play.
Victoria's voice filled the room.
"Forget your pathetic son. He'll die... and you'll still be here rocking mine."
The room fell silent.

Victoria's face lost all color.
She realized I had just heard everything.
