Chapter 3: The Empire Fights Back

Chapter 3: The Empire Fights Back

News spread across Dallas within twenty-four hours.

HALE CONSTRUCTION UNDER FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

CEO'S WIFE ACCUSED OF ELDER ABUSE.

Television vans surrounded the mansion.

Former employees began calling.

Then dozens.

Then hundreds.

One by one they shared stories.

Invoices altered.

Contracts redirected.

Workers fired after refusing illegal orders.

A class-action lawsuit quickly formed.

Inside the company headquarters, the board of directors gathered for an emergency meeting.

Vivian still believed she had one final weapon.

Voting control.

She walked into the boardroom wearing white, pretending nothing had changed.

"I remain majority shareholder."

I entered moments later.

"So you think."

The corporate secretary cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Hale..."

"It's Ms. Cole now," she corrected.

"No."

He adjusted his glasses.

"According to the original trust..."

He slid a folder toward her.

"...all transferred shares automatically revert if fraud or coercion is proven."

She opened the folder.

Her hands began shaking.

"Impossible."

I stood.

"My mother anticipated something like this."

Years earlier, while battling cancer, my mother had quietly inserted a protective clause into the trust.

No ownership obtained through coercion could ever remain valid.

Vivian never knew it existed.

The board voted unanimously.

"Richard Hale is reinstated as Chairman."

"And Isabella Hale is appointed interim Chief Executive Officer."

Marcus slammed his fist on the table.

"You planned this!"

"No," I answered.

"My mother did."

Security escorted both of them out of the building.

Employees stood and applauded.

May you like

Not for me.

For my father.
