Chapter 1: The First Crack

The silence shattered before anyone found the courage to speak.

Vivian's perfectly painted smile disappeared as her own recorded voice echoed through the living room.

"...Increase his dose before the notary gets here. I need him too confused to ask questions."

Marcus lunged toward me.

"Give me that phone!"

I stepped back.

"You touch me," I said calmly, "and the recording uploads automatically to three attorneys, two television stations, and the Dallas Police Department."

He stopped.

He didn't know whether I was bluffing.

I wasn't.

My father looked between us, disbelief filling his tired eyes.

"Isabella..."

I squeezed his shoulder.

"It's over, Dad."

Vivian recovered first.

"You secretly recorded me? That's illegal."

I smiled.

"Not in Texas when one party to the conversation consents."

Her confidence cracked.

For years she had relied on intimidation.

She wasn't prepared for someone who actually knew the law.

I opened my briefcase and removed several folders.

"The recording is only the beginning."

I placed certified copies across the coffee table.

"The original Hale Family Trust."

"The amended shareholder agreement."

"The forensic handwriting analysis."

"The medical reports proving my father lacked legal capacity on the day every transfer was signed."

Marcus flipped through the papers.

His face turned white.

"These are fake."

"Actually," I replied, "they're certified by the court."

Just then the front door opened.

Four people entered.

Two attorneys.

One forensic accountant.

And Detective Laura Bennett from Dallas Financial Crimes.

Vivian stepped backward.

"You called the police?"

"No."

Detective Bennett smiled politely.

"Someone else did."

The elderly nurse who had texted me quietly walked through the doorway behind them.

"I did."

Vivian stared at her.

"You little traitor."

The nurse folded her hands.

"I became a nurse to protect patients."

She looked toward my father.

"Not watch them be poisoned."

The detective immediately requested every medication bottle in the house.

Marcus tried slipping toward the hallway.

"Leaving already?" I asked.

He froze.

Detective Bennett nodded toward another officer entering behind her.

"Mr. Marcus Cole, we'd appreciate it if you stayed."

The accountant placed another document on the table.

"There are also twenty-three million dollars missing from Hale Construction."

Marcus's breathing grew uneven.

Vivian whispered, "Don't say anything."

The detective answered for him.

"They won't have to."

May you like

She held up a search warrant.

"We already have the bank records."
