Chapter 2: The House Begins to Speak

Chapter 2: The House Begins to Speak

For the next six hours, the mansion no longer felt like Vivian's kingdom.

It became an investigation.

Every room revealed another secret.

Fake invoices.

Forged signatures.

Hidden safes.

Even my mother's jewelry collection, supposedly "lost" after her death, was discovered locked inside Vivian's private dressing room.

My father watched everything from his wheelchair.

Each discovery hurt him.

Not because of the money.

Because every document represented another betrayal.

Late that evening Detective Bennett approached me.

"You expected all this."

"I expected worse."

She handed me a flash drive.

"We searched Marcus's office."

Inside were security camera recordings.

The videos showed caregivers being fired whenever they questioned Vivian.

Doctors pressured into increasing medication.

Notaries arriving while my father drifted in and out of consciousness.

Then came the final video.

Marcus laughing.

"Old man won't remember signing anything tomorrow."

Even the detective looked disturbed.

"This isn't just fraud anymore."

"What is it?"

"Attempted exploitation of a vulnerable adult."

"And possibly attempted murder."

My stomach tightened.

"Dad..."

The detective nodded.

"The toxicology report will tell us more."

Across the room, my father slowly removed his wedding ring.

He held it in his hand.

"I promised your mother I'd protect this family."

I knelt beside him.

"You still did."

He looked confused.

"I failed."

"No."

I smiled through tears.

May you like

"You raised a daughter who came back."

For the first time in years, he smiled.
