CHAPTER 4 The Hidden File Inside Raymond Saint Claire’s Briefcase

CHAPTER 4 The Hidden File Inside Raymond Saint Claire’s Briefcase

The news traveled through Whitmore–Saint Claire Medical Center faster than any official announcement.

Nobody knew exactly what happened inside the third-floor conference room.

But everyone knew something had changed.

Doctors whispered quietly near the elevators.

Nurses exchanged concerned looks at the stations.

Executives who once followed Preston Whitmore’s every order suddenly became careful with their words.

Because power had shifted.

And everyone could feel it.

For years, Preston had been the man everyone wanted to impress.

He was confident.

Charming.

Always surrounded by important people.

He walked through the hospital with the certainty of someone who believed he could never fall.

But that morning, employees watched him leave under security supervision.

No cameras.

No speeches.

No proud smile.

Just silence.

And that silence frightened people more than any scandal.

Inside the private family lounge, Emily sat near the window overlooking the city.

The room was peaceful.

Almost too peaceful.

A nurse had checked on her twice already.

The doctor had confirmed the baby was safe.

But Emily still felt a heaviness inside her chest.

Not physical pain.

Emotional exhaustion.

Because betrayal hurt differently when it came from the person you trusted most.

Raymond entered the room carrying the same black leather briefcase he had brought earlier.

He placed it carefully on the table.

Emily looked at him.

“You knew.”

Raymond stopped.

“Knew what?”

“That something was wrong.”

He remained silent.

That silence answered her.

Emily looked down.

“How long?”

Raymond walked closer.

“Emily.”

“How long did you know Preston was hiding things from me?”

Raymond sighed.

“Months.”

The answer hurt.

Even though she expected it.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

Raymond sat across from her.

“Because I knew you.”

Emily looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you would have defended him.”

She looked away.

Because she knew he was right.

Years of marriage had taught her to protect Preston even when he was wrong.

Raymond continued.

“You always searched for the best part of people.”

“That is one of your greatest strengths.”

He paused.

“But sometimes…”

“It is also what allows people to hurt you.”

Emily remained quiet.

She looked at her wedding ring.

The same ring Preston placed on her finger years ago.

A symbol of promises.

A symbol of forever.

But now it felt heavier.

“I thought I knew him.”

Raymond’s expression softened.

“I know.”

Emily swallowed.

“That’s the worst part.”

“He didn’t become someone else overnight.”

“He slowly became someone I didn’t recognize.”

Raymond opened his briefcase.

Inside were several documents.

Emily immediately noticed the top page.

A familiar name appeared.

Whitmore Foundation Trust.

Her eyebrows tightened.

“What is that?”

Raymond didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he carefully removed the document.

“This is the part I wanted to discuss after you were safe.”

Emily looked at him.

“Why does that sound serious?”

“Because it is.”

He placed the paper in front of her.

Emily read the first few lines.

Then her expression changed.

“No.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Raymond watched her carefully.

“Emily.”

“This can’t be true.”

She looked up.

“Where did you get this?”

“From the original archive.”

Her hands trembled slightly.

The document was dated twenty years earlier.

Before she married Preston.

Before she entered the Whitmore family.

Before she knew anything about hospital politics.

“What am I looking at?”

Raymond took a breath.

“The reason your mother’s name is attached to this hospital.”

Emily froze.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

She stared at him.

“My mother was a teacher.”

Raymond nodded.

“She was.”

“She was also one of the people who protected this institution before anyone knew its value.”

Emily slowly shook her head.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Raymond leaned forward.

“Your mother was not involved in medicine.”

“But she understood people.”

“She believed hospitals were not buildings.”

“They were promises.”

Emily looked back at the document.

Her mother had always been the person everyone underestimated.

Quiet.

Humble.

Kind.

The same qualities Emily inherited.

“She never told me.”

“She wanted you to have a normal life.”

Raymond paused.

“She wanted you to choose your own path.”

Emily touched the paper.

“And Preston knew?”

Raymond’s expression changed.

That small change was enough.

Emily immediately understood.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Raymond looked toward the window.

“Because his family knew.”

A cold feeling moved through Emily.

“What are you saying?”

Raymond opened another file.

“This is why I came today.”

Inside was a collection of old photographs.

Letters.

Legal documents.

Emily picked up the first photograph.

Her breath stopped.

It showed Preston’s father standing beside Raymond years ago.

Behind them was the opening ceremony of Whitmore–Saint Claire Medical Center.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note attached to the photograph.

Emily read it.

Then her face became pale.

“What does this mean?”

Raymond looked at her.

“It means the Whitmore family has been hiding the truth for decades.”

Emily stared at him.

“What truth?”

Raymond’s voice became quieter.

“The hospital was never supposed to belong to them.”

A pause.

“It was supposed to be protected by people who valued compassion over control.”

Emily slowly placed the photograph down.

“And Preston knew this?”

“Yes.”

“His entire career…”

“Yes.”

“Everything he built…”

Raymond nodded.

“Was built on a lie.”

The room became silent.

Emily looked toward the hospital outside.

The same hospital where she had worked.

The same hospital where she thought she belonged.

Now she realized something terrifying.

Her marriage was not the only thing that had been built on deception.

Her entire connection to the Whitmore family was.

Raymond closed the folder.

“There is one more thing you need to know.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“Preston did not marry you by accident.”

Her heart stopped.

“What are you saying?”

Raymond looked directly into her eyes.

“I’m saying your marriage may have started as a plan.”

The words cut deeper than anything Vanessa or Preston had done.

Emily sat completely still.

Because suddenly the pain in the hospital hallway was no longer the biggest betrayal.

The biggest betrayal was realizing…

The man she loved might have chosen her for a reason she never knew.

May you like

And somewhere inside Whitmore–Saint Claire Medical Center…

Someone else was already preparing to stop Raymond from revealing the rest of the truth.
