CHAPTER 12 The Confession Preston Was Too Afraid to Make

The private conference room remained silent after the phone call ended.

Emily stared at the screen.

Preston’s name was still visible.

The same name that had once appeared on her phone every morning.

The same name that had once made her smile.

Now it only brought confusion.

Raymond watched her carefully.

“He wants a meeting.”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

Claire looked worried.

“You can’t seriously be thinking about seeing him alone.”

Emily looked at her.

“I’m not.”

Raymond stepped forward.

“I’ll come with you.”

Emily did not answer immediately.

Because she knew something.

If Preston was telling the truth, he was finally ready to reveal something he had hidden for years.

And if he was lying…

She would know.

The next afternoon, they met at an abandoned private office building owned by the Whitmore family.

It was a place Preston had used years ago for confidential business meetings.

A place where decisions were made away from cameras.

Away from employees.

Away from consequences.

Emily entered first.

Raymond followed closely behind.

Preston was already waiting.

But he looked different.

The confidence was gone.

The expensive suit remained.

The perfect appearance remained.

But the arrogance had disappeared.

For the first time, Emily saw fear in his eyes.

Preston looked at her.

“Thank you for coming.”

Emily remained standing.

“Talk.”

No greeting.

No emotion.

No sympathy.

Preston noticed.

And somehow, that hurt more than anger.

Because he finally understood.

He had lost the right to ask for kindness.

He took a deep breath.

“I know you hate me.”

Emily looked at him.

“That’s not why I’m here.”

“Then why?”

“Because you said you know who killed my mother.”

Preston looked down.

“Yes.”

Raymond stepped closer.

“Start explaining.”

Preston looked at him.

“I know you don’t trust me.”

Raymond answered immediately.

“You’re correct.”

Preston accepted that.

Then he walked toward the table.

He placed a small envelope down.

“This belonged to my father.”

Emily looked at it.

“Your father?”

Preston nodded.

“He kept it hidden.”

Raymond picked it up.

His expression changed when he saw the handwriting.

“Where did you get this?”

Preston looked away.

“After my father died, I found a locked box in his office.”

“And you kept it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Preston was silent.

Then he answered.

“Because I was afraid.”

Emily looked at him.

“Afraid of what?”

“Of knowing the truth.”

That answer surprised her.

Preston continued.

“When I was younger, I believed my family built everything.”

“I believed we deserved control.”

“I believed people like your family were just investors standing in our way.”

He looked at Raymond.

“But then I found my father’s documents.”

“What did they show?”

Preston swallowed.

“That my family had been manipulating the hospital for years.”

The room became silent.

Emily watched him.

“You knew?”

“I knew pieces.”

“Not everything.”

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?”

Preston closed his eyes.

“Because I was weak.”

The honesty was unexpected.

“I was raised to protect the Whitmore name.”

“My father taught me one thing.”

“Never admit weakness.”

Emily looked at him.

“And you followed him.”

“Yes.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed me.”

Preston lowered his head.

“Yes.”

The simple answer shocked her.

Because for once, he was not defending himself.

He was accepting what he did.

Emily looked away.

“Why did you marry me?”

The question he feared finally arrived.

Preston became still.

Raymond watched him.

“Answer her.”

Preston took a long breath.

“When I first met you…”

He stopped.

Emily waited.

“Your family history was already known inside the Whitmore circle.”

Her heart tightened.

“So it was true.”

Preston nodded.

“I knew who you were.”

A painful silence.

“But that wasn’t the reason I stayed.”

Emily looked at him.

“Explain.”

“When I met you, I expected someone different.”

“Someone obsessed with money.”

“Someone who wanted influence.”

He shook his head.

“But you weren’t.”

“You cared about your students.”

“You remembered people’s birthdays.”

“You helped strangers without expecting anything.”

His voice became quieter.

“And I hated that.”

Emily frowned.

“You hated that?”

“Yes.”

“Because you reminded me of the person my family used to be before power changed us.”

The room became silent.

Preston continued.

“I started with the wrong intentions.”

“But somewhere along the way…”

“I actually fell in love with you.”

Emily looked away.

The words hurt.

Because they were exactly what she wanted to hear years ago.

But now they were too late.

“You don’t get credit for loving me after using me.”

Preston nodded.

“I know.”

A tear appeared in his eye.

“I know.”

Raymond looked at the envelope.

“What is inside?”

Preston pushed it toward him.

“Proof.”

Raymond opened it.

Inside were old financial records.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

And one document that made everyone freeze.

Emily looked closer.

“What is that?”

Raymond’s face became serious.

“It’s a transfer agreement.”

“For what?”

Raymond looked at her.

“For ownership.”

Emily’s heart sank.

“Of the hospital?”

Raymond nodded.

“But that’s impossible.”

Preston shook his head.

“No.”

“It was almost completed.”

“When?”

“Years ago.”

Emily looked at him.

“Who stopped it?”

Preston hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your mother.”

The room became quiet.

Emily stared at him.

“My mother stopped them.”

“Yes.”

“And then she died.”

Preston looked down.

“Yes.”

Raymond’s expression darkened.

“So Alexander Whitmore had a reason to silence her.”

Preston nodded.

“But there’s more.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

Preston pulled out another document.

“This was found with my father’s records.”

Emily read the title.

Her face changed.

Emergency Succession Plan.

“What is this?”

Preston looked at her.

“A plan created in case your mother’s daughter ever discovered the truth.”

A cold feeling moved through Emily.

“Why?”

Preston answered quietly.

“Because they knew you would come looking.”

The room became silent.

Then Emily saw the final page.

A name.

The person who approved the plan.

Her breathing stopped.

Because it was not Alexander.

It was not Preston’s father.

It was someone she trusted.

Someone still alive.

Someone close.

Emily looked up.

Her voice barely came out.

“No…”

Raymond looked at the document.

Then his expression changed.

Because he recognized the signature.

The same person who had guided Emily for years.

The same person who claimed to protect her.

The same person who had access to every secret.

And suddenly, everyone realized the truth.

May you like

The enemy had never been far away.

The enemy had been standing beside Emily the entire time.
