CHAPTER 13 The Betrayal Hidden Behind a Familiar Face

CHAPTER 13 The Betrayal Hidden Behind a Familiar Face
The room felt smaller after Emily saw the signature.
The air seemed impossible to breathe.
Because the name written at the bottom of the document belonged to someone she trusted.
Someone who had held her hand through grief.

Someone who had promised to protect her.
Someone she never imagined could hurt her.
Emily stared at the paper.
“No.”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Raymond took the document from her.
He studied the signature again.
His expression became darker.
“It can’t be.”
Preston looked between them.
“You know who it is.”
Nobody answered.
Emily looked at Raymond.
“Tell me.”
Raymond remained silent.
“Uncle.”
He closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he finally spoke.
“Claire.”
The name echoed through the room.
Emily felt a sharp pain in her chest.
Not because she was surprised.
Because a part of her had already known.
The person who knew too much.
The person who had been there from the beginning.
The person who always seemed to appear whenever something went wrong.
Claire.
Emily slowly shook her head.
“No.”
Preston looked confused.
“Who is Claire?”
“My best friend.”
Raymond looked at him.
“And someone who had access to your wife’s personal information for years.”
Preston’s expression changed.
“So she was involved?”
Emily immediately looked at him.
“Don’t.”
Preston stopped.
Because he heard the pain in her voice.
This was not about proving someone guilty.
This was about losing another person she trusted.
The door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Claire stood there.
Her face was pale.
She knew.
She knew they had discovered everything.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Emily whispered.
“How long?”
Claire looked down.
“Emily…”
“How long have you known?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Almost from the beginning.”
The answer hurt more than Emily expected.
She had hoped Claire would deny it.
She had hoped there would be another explanation.
But there wasn’t.
Emily looked away.
“Why?”
Claire stepped inside.
“Because your mother asked me to.”
Everyone froze.
Emily looked back.
“What?”
Claire wiped her eyes.
“Your mother knew someone was trying to control the hospital.”
“She knew the Whitmore family was becoming dangerous.”
“She asked me to watch over you.”
Emily shook her head.
“Watch over me?”
“You were supposed to protect me.”
Claire nodded.
“I was.”
“Then why did you help Preston find me?”
Claire looked devastated.
“Because I thought I was saving you.”
Emily laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“You thought marrying me to a man who was hiding his identity was saving me?”
“No.”
Claire shook her head quickly.
“I didn’t know he would hurt you.”
“You knew enough.”
That sentence silenced everyone.
Because it was true.
Claire knew enough.
Enough to warn her.
Enough to stop it.
Enough to tell the truth.
But she chose silence.
Claire looked at Raymond.
“I tried to stop it.”
Raymond’s expression was cold.
“When?”
“Before the wedding.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
Claire looked at her.
“I found out Preston’s family wanted access to the trust.”
“I confronted him.”
“And?”
Claire swallowed.
“He told me he loved you.”
Emily stared.
“And you believed him?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“I wanted to.”
The honesty was painful.
Because Emily understood.
Everyone wanted to believe the people they loved were better than they were.
That was exactly what happened to her.
Claire continued.
“But after your mother died, I became afraid.”
“Alexander threatened me.”
“He told me if I exposed the truth, you would become the target.”
Emily looked at her.
“So you protected me by letting me live a lie.”
Claire lowered her head.
“Yes.”
A long silence followed.
Then Emily asked the question that mattered most.
“Did you know about my mother?”
Claire looked confused.
“What?”
“Did you know someone killed her?”
The color disappeared from Claire’s face.
That reaction was enough.
Emily stepped back.
“You knew.”
Claire whispered.
“I suspected.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice became stronger.
“You knew.”
Claire started crying.
“I found evidence.”
“What evidence?”
Claire looked toward Raymond.
Then back at Emily.
“Your mother left a recording.”
The room became silent.
“A recording?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
Claire hesitated.
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
Claire reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small device.
“I kept it hidden.”
“Why?”
“Because I was waiting for the right time.”
Emily stared.
“The right time?”
Claire nodded.
“When you were strong enough.”
Emily looked at the device.
Then at Claire.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“I know.”
She handed it to her.
Raymond carefully took it.
Everyone gathered around.
The recording was old.
The quality was damaged.
But when the audio started…
Emily immediately recognized the voice.
Her mother.
Her hands covered her mouth.
“If you are hearing this, then I am no longer here.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
The recording continued.
“I need you to understand something.”
“The people who hurt me are not strangers.”
Everyone remained silent.
“They are people who smiled at me.”
“People who called me family.”
Emily looked at Raymond.
Then Claire.
Then Preston.
The recording continued.
“But the most dangerous person is not the one who hates you.”
A pause.
“It is the one who convinces you they love you.”
Emily felt a chill.
Because those words were meant for her.
The recording ended with one final sentence.
“Emily, if you ever discover the truth, do not seek revenge.”
“Seek justice.”
The device went silent.
Nobody spoke.
Then the lights in the room suddenly flickered.
Raymond immediately looked toward the door.
“Everyone stay here.”
A security alarm began sounding.
The hospital system displayed a message across every screen:
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.
Preston looked worried.
“What is happening?”
Raymond checked his phone.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Emily asked.
Raymond looked at her.
“Someone accessed the main control system.”
“From inside the hospital.”
A cold silence followed.
Because everyone understood.
The person behind everything was not running away.
They were making their final move.
Claire looked terrified.
“He knows.”
Emily looked at her.
“Who?”
Claire whispered.
“Alexander.”
The hallway outside suddenly went dark.
And through the emergency speakers…
A voice appeared.
Calm.
Confident.
Familiar.
“Emily.”
Everyone froze.
Because the voice belonged to the man who had been hiding for years.
Alexander Whitmore.
“Your mother spent her life protecting this hospital.”
A pause.
“But tonight…”
“You’re going to learn what happens when someone tries to take it away from me.”
Emily looked toward the speaker.
And for the first time…
May you like
She was not afraid of the person hunting her.
She was ready to face him.
