Chapter 6 - Dark House.

Emergency lights painted the mansion corridors a dim red as people rushed toward the exits.

Ethan lifted Lily into his arms while Elena held the hollow key against her chest.

The fire alarm continued, but no smoke appeared.

Jonah realized the alarm was a diversion when he found the electrical panel forced open.

Someone had cut power only to the main house and disabled several security cameras at the same time.

Mara ordered everyone to stay together.

Victor had disappeared.

So had one of his guards.

Elena led them through the servants' passage because she knew the old house better than Victor believed.

At the intersection behind the library, they heard footsteps approaching in darkness.

Ethan pushed Lily behind him.

A flashlight beam appeared, followed by Nathan Mercer.

He held a pistol low against his leg and the red box under his other arm.

"Give me the key," Nathan said.

Elena refused.

Nathan looked exhausted rather than triumphant.

"You don't understand what Victor will do if he thinks I failed."

Ethan answered that Nathan had already failed the moment Elena came out of the floor.

Nathan raised the weapon.

Lily suddenly threw a brass candleholder down the side corridor.

The crash made Nathan turn his head.

Jonah lunged.

The gun fired into the ceiling, showering plaster into the passage.

Ethan pulled Elena and Lily behind a stone arch while Mara helped Jonah wrestle Nathan to the floor.

The red box slid across the tiles.

Elena reached it first.

Inside were bank records, photographs of signed documents, and a small digital recorder.

The recorder's memory indicator flashed once, then died.

Nathan laughed through split lips.

"Battery's dead."

Elena said batteries could be replaced.

Nathan shook his head.

"Not if Victor wiped the file remotely."

Jonah handcuffed him.

Mara asked where Victor had gone.

Nathan's eyes moved toward the wall.

"There's a tunnel under the west staircase."

Before he could say more, a deep mechanical rumble moved through the house.

The evidence around the red box changed the balance of the room because it could be examined, tested, and placed in front of people who had believed the lie.

For Elena, knowledge did not feel comforting; it felt like discovering how many chances the truth had been deliberately denied.

The threat of the shot in the passage kept everyone from treating the discovery as a victory, because the people behind the conspiracy were still making choices in real time.

Elena noticed how quickly fear returned whenever Nathan's capture echoed something from the chamber, yet she forced herself to stay present and keep asking questions.

Ethan watched Lily more carefully than any door or camera, because her silence often revealed danger before the adults around her recognized it.

Mara refused to call anything a coincidence until she had checked the timing, the money, and the person who benefited from it.

Jonah kept his attention on physical details, knowing polished stories usually failed at hinges, footprints, locks, power switches, and overlooked exits.

What made the scheme terrifying was its respectability: signatures, medical language, legal filings, and expensive rooms had made cruelty look administrative.

What made it fragile was the same thing, because every document created a date, every payment created a trail, and every lie required another witness.

No one raised their voice, but tension moved through the group as sharply as if someone had pulled a wire tight between them.

Elena looked toward the floor.

"That's the archive room."

Nathan's face drained of color.

"Then he's burning it.
