Chapter 17 - Second Birthday.

The gunshot came from the corridor where two officers had been guarding the junction.

Ethan pulled Elena and Lily's brass key back inside the vault while Mara drew her weapon.

One officer stumbled into view with a wound in his shoulder.

The other shouted that a man had entered through the garden drainage tunnel.

Simon had returned to the estate.

He had not escaped to flee.

He had escaped to reach the vault before prosecutors could secure it.

Mara ordered the vault door closed, but Elena refused.

She said the father's recording had to leave the room.

Ethan removed the memory cassette while Jonah carried the trust certificates.

Lights failed in the tunnel again.

Simon knew the mansion's systems because he had helped finance the renovations.

Gunfire struck stone near the vault entrance.

Victor ducked behind a pillar.

Then he shouted toward the darkness.

"Simon, it's over."

Simon answered with a laugh.

"It was over for you three years ago."

Victor looked at Elena.

For the first time, he appeared less like an enemy than a man finally seeing the shape of what he had done.

He admitted Simon told him Elena would expose both of them unless she was controlled.

Victor agreed to a temporary confinement and later allowed it to continue because he feared prison and losing the estate.

"Every week I told myself I'd end it next week," he said.

Elena's expression did not soften.

"Lily counted those weeks too."

Simon moved closer in the darkness.

Victor suddenly stepped into the corridor and shouted his location.

Simon fired.

The bullet hit Victor high in the chest and spun him backward.

Mara returned fire and forced Simon behind a stone wall.

Ethan dragged Victor into cover.

Victor gripped Ethan's sleeve.

"The drainage gate," he gasped.

"He'll use Lily."

Ethan looked toward the far tunnel.

Jonah kept his attention on physical details, knowing polished stories usually failed at hinges, footprints, locks, power switches, and overlooked exits.

What made the scheme terrifying was its respectability: signatures, medical language, legal filings, and expensive rooms had made cruelty look administrative.

What made it fragile was the same thing, because every document created a date, every payment created a trail, and every lie required another witness.

No one raised their voice, but tension moved through the group as sharply as if someone had pulled a wire tight between them.

Elena had learned that waiting could be used against her, so she measured each pause by whether it protected Lily or protected the people who hurt them.

Ethan wanted immediate answers, yet he understood that one reckless move could give Victor or Simon another story to use in court.

Lily's presence changed every decision, because the adults could afford anger but the child needed certainty, routine, and a door she knew would stay open.

The mansion had taught them to distrust quiet, and even now the absence of footsteps felt less peaceful than unfinished.

Each discovery narrowed the space in which the conspirators could hide, but it also made their next move more desperate and less predictable.

The truth was finally gaining weight, not as a feeling but as a structure built from records, memories, physical evidence, and people willing to testify.

Lily was not beside Elena anymore.

A small service door stood open.

On the floor lay the pale pink ribbon she had started wearing again that morning.

Simon had planned the entire return around one final hostage.
