Chapter 2 - The First Lie.

The foyer exploded into motion without anyone raising their voice.

One guard reached inside his jacket, but Jonah slammed the man's wrist against the banister before he could draw anything.

Mara held up the court order and told Victor that interfering with the recovery of a missing person would become evidence.

Victor smiled as though the threat amused him.

"My sister is confused," he said.

Elena tried to stand on her own and nearly fell.

Ethan wrapped his coat around her shoulders while Lily clung to her waist.

"Don't let him take me back," Elena whispered.

The sentence turned Ethan's fear into something colder.

Sirens approached from beyond the iron gates because Mara had triggered an emergency alert the moment the trapdoor opened.

Victor's confidence did not break.

He told arriving officers that Elena suffered from severe mental illness and had hidden herself beneath the house during an episode.

He even produced medical records bearing her name.

Ethan wanted to hit him, but Mara caught his arm before anger could become Victor's evidence.

Elena pointed toward the guard Jonah restrained.

"That's Nathan Mercer."

Nathan stared at the floor.

"He brought the food," Elena continued.

"He chained the hatch every night."

Nathan suddenly twisted free and ran toward the service corridor.

Jonah chased him through the kitchen while officers secured the staircase.

A back door slammed somewhere beyond the pantry.

By the time Jonah reached the courtyard, Nathan was gone and a black sedan was tearing through a maintenance gate.

Victor calmly asked whether anyone intended to apologize for damaging his floor.

Then an officer looked inside the hidden chamber.

There was a mattress, empty water bottles, restraints, and a small battery lantern.

There was also a camera mounted in the corner.

The camera's memory card was missing.

Elena stared at the empty slot and went pale.

"He recorded everything," she said.

Ethan asked why.

Elena looked directly at Victor.

"Because he needed everyone to believe I chose to disappear."

That warning mattered because Nathan's escape was exactly the kind of pressure designed to make frightened people abandon careful plans.

The memory of Victor's forged medical story remained close enough to affect Elena's breathing, but not close enough to decide what she would do next.

For the first time in years, the people who built the lie had to react to Elena instead of forcing Elena to react to them.

Ethan realized that rescue had not ended the danger; it had only removed the wall that kept the danger invisible.

No apology could return the missing years, so Elena focused on the one thing still available to her: deciding what happened after the truth was known.

Lily asked fewer questions than the adults expected, which made every question she did ask land with uncomfortable precision.

The family had begun to understand that survival was not a single dramatic moment but a chain of small choices made while fear was still present.

The clue involving the missing camera card connected one more private act to the larger plan, making it harder for anyone to dismiss what happened as one person's breakdown.

Even Victor's confidence seemed less solid whenever the conversation returned to the missing camera card, as if that detail belonged to a version of events he had not rehearsed.

Victor's expression remained smooth.

Then Lily tugged Ethan's sleeve and whispered that Nathan had taken something else from the room that morning.

May you like

"A red box," she said.

Victor finally stopped smiling.
