Chapter 4: The Trial

Chapter 4: The Trial

The courtroom was silent as the prosecutor played the voicemail timestamps.

Three missed calls.

Four unanswered texts.

Hours without checking on an eight-year-old child.

Then came the photographs.

The locked basement door.

The concrete floor.

The stained blanket Noah had been left with.

Even Sarah couldn't look at the screen.

When Noah testified through a recorded child interview, everyone listened in complete silence.

"I thought my dad couldn't find me."

His small voice echoed through the courtroom.

"I kept waiting."

Several jurors wiped away tears.

Sarah eventually admitted she had been angry because Noah kept interrupting the birthday games and asking to call home.

She wanted the party to continue.

So she decided to lock him downstairs "just for a little while."

That "little while" lasted nearly four hours.

The jury deliberated less than three hours before returning a guilty verdict.

Sarah was sentenced to prison, ordered to complete parenting and mental health counseling, and permanently lost unsupervised access to children.

As deputies escorted her away, she turned toward me.

"I'm sorry."

I believed she regretted what happened.

But regret arrived far too late.
